toilet training your kitty

For years, I’ve been hearing about training your cat to use a toilet in order to get rid of your litter box. I have some questions about the procedure that I’d love to run by any dopers in the know.

First, can you train cats to do this in a house with 3 cats, not just 1?

Second, can you train them to only use one particular toilet and not the others ones in the house?

Lastly, what happens if the cat has to go and someone has left the lid down?

We’re wondering if we want to even attempt this process, or leave it litter-box style instead.

Apparently poster Rubes successfully taught his cat to do this, but he only had the one cat. I haven’t seen him around lately, but a search should bring it up.

Aha! Found 'em. And rubes is now listed as a Guest, so I guess that means he didn’t subscribe. More’s the pity.

Thanks for the links. Yeah I figure one cat is relatively doable, but not sure how to handle 3 cats, especially if I want them using just 1 toilet, not the other 2.

And let’s face it, researching kitty pee patterns is a nasty business.
