Tolkien discussion: Were Túrin's misfortunes his own fault, or due to Morgoth's curse?

The man loved Norse myths - fight the good fight and try to die on your feet.

Word, Chronos!

I think my most memorable quote from the whole Narn i Hin Hurin is:

-Nienor Niniel, after discovering she is his sister/wife/mother of his unborn child

That quote by Niënor about Túrin was the point where the lightbulb clicked on in my head as to what Tolkien was attempting to do in inventing his languages. It made me understand the appeal of having a language where that sentiment could be summed up so lyrically… and what kind of people would have used such a language in the first place.

My favorite quite in the whole Legendarium, really.

So I finally finished The Silmarillian!!! I was thinking of this while reading that chapter and, while I think the curse had some effect on him, he probably would have reached the same end without it. Turin was just an all around asshole and douche bag.
