This is a polling question, and may belong in IMHO. But I’m just a-itchin’ to know. Is anyone else picking up a LOTR vibe from the last Buffy? If so, why? I’m intuiting (maybe) something I’m not quite bright enough to articulate, so, anyone else? Help! (Sorry for getting all Andrewesque here. Mods, please move if this is in the wrong forum.)
This is interesting. We have Merry, Pippen, Frodo, and Sam. And we have Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles. The Hobbits and the Scoobies.
There’s the Uber-Vamps and the Orcs. There’s the land of Mordor and the high school.
Wow, you’re onto something. Do you think that Whedon had a clue as to what he was doing?

Charogne, you wanna be more explicit? I don’t see anything Tolkien-esque in the Buffy finale, except very very very vaguely that they both relate to grand mythological themes – like magical weapons, heroism, etc.
… course that bit about Buffy getting her finger bitten off by Spike could have just been coincidence…
Well what about the characterization of everyone? When he said this, I couldn’t help but think of the core Scoobies and the Hobbits. I mean, nobody expects Merry and Pippen to be herioc. Nobody expects them to become what they do at the end of the trilogy. And think of Xander and Willow. Nobody expects them to be heroic either. But they always, always are in the end. Especially Xander.
And what about the imagry of the Orcs and the Uber-Vamps? Do you not see the possible influence?
And of course there’s the parallel of Giles and Gadalf.
What do you think?
Well, Joss made several referenes to LOTR in the actual script for Chosen, including “Sauron himself would be impressed”.
So then was I the only one who called Willow “Rosenberg the White” during her spell scene?
Jeez, sciguy…at least get it right.
She’s Gandalf the Gay!
(I wish I’d come up with that myself, but it’s from TWoP)
I think what people are seeing is a Peter Jackson influence, not a Tolkien influence. The “orc” scene reminded them of Two Towers.
