Tolkien Movies Dialogue

I was watching a few minutes of The Two Towers this weekend on cable. I think it was FX channel or maybe AMC. I noticed that anytime there was dialogue that it was difficult to understand, volume wise. Looking back, I noticed its like that for all the Tolkien films. It didn’t matter if I was watching on cable or DVD, I always had to turn up the volume more when watching them than if I was watching anything else.

Was this something with the way Jackson recorded the audio or is it something else. It was especially noticeable with Gandalf, but maybe that was just Ian McKellan talking with a low mysterious voice.

Anyone else notice this?

I never noticed this, but I have noticed more and more tv shows run the background music at nearly the same level as the dialogue. This makes it hard for me to distinguish. Brit shows seem more prone to this then American.

Oh I thought I was going deaf. I still might be. But yes, all the LotR films need the sound turned way up on my TV. I thought it was the different cable channels screwing with us. Now I’m wondering if there is something odd about the audio. As if it lost some fullness being transferred to cable TV sound.

Glad I’m not alone with this thought. Really bugs me.

Welcome to the awful world of TV sound mixing. Best way to deal is wear headphones or turn on CC.
