I think this (the Standing Silence) is really what the question, and Tolkien, were talking about. There are loads of references to the Valar, and Eru Iluvatar – but that’s not “religion”. The only religious *practice *is when Faramir’s men say grace before eating.
Nitpick: That should be “Curufinwe”. “Curufin” was Feanor’s real name.
Um, Curufinwë was Feanor’s “father” name. Curufin is the generally accepted name of one of Feanor’s sons. Curufin’s name could well have been a truncated form of “Curufinwë”, as some sources say that Feanor named Curufin after himself.
- What two brothers are considered the “founders” of the Shire?
- What king gave them permission to found the shire?
Marcho and Branco. (where did I read that these are analogous to Angles and Saxons…?)
Close enough. But it’s Blanco.
Which of the following plot twists were actually part of JRRT’s early drafts of LOTR?
-
Balin emerges from the depths of Moria, claiming he “fell asleep in the tub”.
-
Galadriel discovers Pippin singing the praises of a bath while he takes one in her mirror.
-
Boromir uses the ring, saves Gondor, destroys Sauron and becomes a wise and benevolent ruler. Book ends 40 chapters sooner.
-
Orc-slaughter competition between Legolas and Gimli becomes so fierce, they take to killing some of the smaller, uglier men of Gondor.
-
Farmer Giles of Ham shows up at the Pelennor Fields and saves Gandalf’s life.
-
Pippin hits on Eowyn in a dark corner of the Houses of Healing: “The hands of a Hobbit are the hands of a healer too, you know…”
-
In the happy days after the defeat of Sauron, Gimli keeps his promise and visits Mirkwood with Legolas – where they are eaten by giant spiders, whom everyone had forgotten about.
-
Aragorn discovers that he is not, in fact, Elendil’s heir. His older brother Mutt, after having lived with Ghan-Buri-Ghan & Co. for decades, lays claim to the throne after all the “dirty work” is done.
-
Ents and Elves dispute over title of “first-born”. Elrond has Quickbeam made into an armoire; Treebeard grinds Glorfindel into mulch.
-
The Shire, mobilized by Merry and Pippin and now hungry for vengeance, annexes Bree and slaughters “the big folk”.
-
Gollum adapts to molten Mt. Doom environment, and later plays a critical role in Fourth Age crisis.
The name usually rendered “Brandybuck” actually meant “Marchbuck”, where “March” means “border region” as in “Warden of the Northern Marches” and so on (a variant of the word “marge” as in “margin”, I should think). But “Braldagamba” literally did mean “Brandy-buck” and would be thoroughly cheeky.
Y’know, I really hope the correct answer is “none of them”. But there’s a twisted part of me that wants those to be true anyway…
Considering they’re all from here, probably none.
The Naugahyde brothers, Brasso and Drano.
OK, so that was Bored of the rings.
Either Arglebargle IV or somebody else, says Bored of the Rings, so I’m gonna guess Argeleb IV is the real answer.
I’m jumping the gun, I know, but since this is Tolkien trivia, and not just Middle-Earth trivia, it’s time to break into that unexplored territory.
- What was the name of Farmer Giles’ dog?
- When the King said, “Give me my sword,” how did Farmer Giles reply?
- What was Prentice called, by those few who didn’t call him Prentice?
Chronos and Athelas, sadly, you’re both right!
RTFirefly, it was Argeleb the second!
I’m out of my league with your questions, tho.
So close, but yet so far!
I knew he was the High King at Ribroast…er, Fornost. Does that push me over the top?
Only if you can complete this poem:
This ring and no other was made by the elves
Who’d pawn their own mother to grab it themselves…
All I can do from memory is the last couplet:
If broken or busted, it cannot be remade.
If found, send to Sorhed (the postage is prepaid).
How about finishing this bit of dialog:
Goodgulf: “Despair not! Bring me my white robes, and quickly!”
Pepsi: “Ah! White robes for white magic!”
Goodgulf: “No, white robes __________________ .”
For surrender.
I don’t know BOTR quite as well as LOTR, but I know it pretty well.
The middle verse is something like:
“ruler of creeper, crawler and scallop
this little doozie packs quite a wallop”
I’ll take a stab at:
"This ring, no other, is made by the elves
"Who'd pawn their own mother to grab it themselves;
"Ruler of creeper, mortal and scallop
"This is the sleeper that packs quite a wallop.
"The Power Almighty rests in this lone ring,
"The power, alrighty, for doing your own thing.
"If broken or busted it cannot be remade;
"If found, send to Sorhed (the postage is prepaid)."
And now off to check…
100% spot on except for the occasional article, capitalization and punctuation. Am I good or what?
“No, white robes for white flag!”
