Tom Jones; surprising.

 No insult intended.

Who’s the Doper who films concerts, though? I know we have one.

Reading your OP, I was thinking ‘hang on, he was here in Bristol the other night playing at the County Ground.’ And hey presto, you’re in Bristol too!

His last 3 albums have all been in a pretty rootsy style, with a lot of gospel, blues, folk and country songs. They’re all very good albums, probably my favourite ones he’s done.

That would be Gaffa.

No worries; “Don’t piss off the lighting guy” is kind of a saying in the business. We usually mean it somewhat humorously.

Yep, I live in one of those overpriced flats on Ashley Down. The whole area was like a Tom Jones festival for the evening, which was really nice (though I feel especially slender and untanned in comparison to his devotees…).

And thanks MrDibble, upthread, for the Nick Cave factoids.

Tom Jones is my mom’s favorite singer. She would always be gushing about how much she loved “Tom Baby” when I was growing up, which obviously stamped him in my mind as music for old people. So it was beyond bizarre when I was in college and he was being pushed to people my age. I can’t say that I wound up becoming a fan, but I have to admit that “If I Only Knew” was actually kind of catchy. Heck, I can still remember the hook all these years later.

That whole album, The Lead and How to Swing It, is pretty good. 4 of the 11 tracks are excellent, IMO:

If I Only Knew
A Girl Like You
Something For Your Head
I Don’t Think So

Flood, the producer, did a helluva job. For good '90s soul/crooner fun, play the album back to back with Barry White’s The Icon Is Love.

Hey, did you know Flood also produced the first couple of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds albums on the Mute label…

 I’ll stop now.
