Just heard at the end of my morning radio show (the one I listen to, not the one I’m on. I’m not on a morning radio show). Former Monkee Davey Jones died in a Florida hospital early this morning, at the age of 66.
Davy Jones is gone. He was a true showman, and I’ll miss him.
edited to add-simulpost, and I heard it on Mark and Brian too.
Huh. My GF and I were just wondering a few weeks ago how many of the Monkees were still alive after the subject came up for some reason. I looked it up and sure enough, they (were) all still living.
For some reason we thought they were a lot older than they are. I remember watching the Monkees on TV in syndication in the 80s and even then it just seemed so old.
Oh no. No, no no. This cannot be. The Monkees are ageless, timeless. My first favorite band. My first crush (Peter Tork)
I am speechless, and very, very sad.
*They are playing ‘I’m a Believer’ on the radio right now. My tears are falling.
 Oh, my favorite Monkee! My childhood crush! Oh, this saddens me!
RIP, Mr. Jones.
The 60s are over.
What rotten timing. He’d just accepted my invitation to show up at prom!
I would have expected Peter to go first.
RIP, Davey.
Last Train to Heaven for Davy.
The Monkees brought much needed humor to a very turbulent time in America. Davy Jones will be remembered fondly and missed.
There, there, Marcia. Why don’t you go call your brothers in? They’re playing football out back.
Here we come, walkin’ down the street.
So long, Davy. You’re going to be missed. Despite your stature, you loomed large as an entertainer.
RIP, Davy. Thanks for the wonderful memories and the great (to me, anyway) music.
Yeah, I’m another “but he was my first crush.” Damn I feel old.
I knew what it was without clicking the link. Probably my favorite Davy moment.
rip.
I loved the show as a kid and I’ve seen it a few times recently and I still enjoyed how goofy they were.
I was a big fan of the show when it was on (it won the Emmy that year for best comedy). I was more a Mike Nesmith fan, but I did like them all.
They were all “my first crush” but not until the 80s when I became a freak fan. I bought all their albums (on vinyl) and listened to them all the time.
Really surprised to hear he died, he was young just 66.
RIP.
Shame his death wasn’t drowning at sea, though.
I became a fan of the Monkees in syndication in the mid-1970s when I was 5-7 years old. At first, Davy was my favorite Monkee because the whole English accent thing was so new to me.
One of the first things I ever bought on my own was the first Monkees album at a garage sale on the next street.
I stopped listening to pop music at age 8 or 9 and didn’t start again until I was 17. At that point, I got all the Monkees albums on vinyl.
In college, I turned more to '60s and '70s rock, alternative, grunge, soul, roots rock, etc.
When I got my first Ipod, I started listening to the Monkees again, and found that their music had really endured. But now, Davy Jones was my least favorite. I can hardly listen to most of the songs that he takes the lead on. And I also resented him for constantly bad-mouthing the other Monkees in the media.
But, goodbye, my least favorite Monkee. It’s the end of an era.
Does that mean I have to grow up now?
