I loved their show, and Tommy was my favorite of the two.
Some of you (who are old enough) may remember that there was a musicians’ strike one year, which left the show without its musical backup. So The Beatles joined Tom and Dick as guests that night, October 13, 1968.
We saw Tom & Dick in Greensburg, PA 5-8 years ago. They put on an excellent show. I actually remembered some of the things they did from their original tv show.
This is sad. The Smothers Brothers were one of the formative comedic influences of my childhood, mostly due to the LPs my parents had. I remember laughing hysterically at their version of “The Fox.”
I always remember a routine where Tommy was the Tooth Fairy in a kid’s bedroom. A cop shows up to arrest him as an intruder. ‘Do you know who I am?’ asks the cop. Tommy’s face fills with wonder, and his voice was filled with axe. ‘You’re the Easter Pig!’
He and his brother’s heyday was before my time, but I interviewed him in the early 2000s when I was an entertainment reporter for a local newspaper and they were doing a stand-up show in town. Was a very nice guy and a great interview. Very charming, funny and conversational. My mom was very impressed I got to meet him.
They had another round of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1988/89, and my parents enjoyed telling me about watching the Comedy Hour decades earlier. It was a show that all three of us enjoyed watching.
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was on for only three seasons. It was cancelled because Tom and Dick wouldn’t knuckle under to the network censors. The network claimed it was because The Smothers Brothers had failed to deliver a show on time, but in fact they had delivered a show that the network refused to air in the U.S. (though it was shown in Canada). Tom and Dick won a lawsuit against the network for breach of contract.
