Tony Awards nominees announced for 2009

There’s the full list, and here’s the big prize
Best Musical
Billy Elliot, The Musical
Next to Normal
Rock of Ages
Shrek The Musical
Anyone else interested? Anyone seen the shows? I know there are usually odds on favorites for these things, but I’m behind on this stuff. So who’s going to take the prizes this year?

If Liza Minnelli wins, the Tony Awards Show is rigged.
I saw her show here in Nevada about a month before she took it to Broadway…it was pretty dreadful - she even forgot the lyrics to Cabaret! Granted, she got better as the evening went on, but by the end of the first of three acts in her show, people were getting up and leaving the theater.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been back to NYC in a long while, so haven’t seen any of the other shows nominated. Still - always fun to watch the Tony Awards Show…the speeches are usually quite overwrought and dripping with emotion. I always get the feeling the acceptance speeches were written and rehearsed for months, with snappy quotes from Moliere and pithy wit, timed perfectly to almost seem off-the-cuff. Wouldn’t miss the show for anything!

Holy crap God of Carnage has one HELLUVA cast…

I’ve heard that Billy Elliot is almost a lock for Best Musical.

Who ever would have imagined that the top contenders for composing the best musical would be Elton John and Dolly Parton. Broadway really is magical.

Well, Elton John did already win a Tony for **Aida **and was nominated for The Lion King, but yeah it is a bit funny to have both him & Dolly Parton nominated in the same year.

I’m just really happy for Slava’s Snowshow. Yeah, existential Russian clowns, you tell Liza where to stuff her Z!

There exist among us poor theatre fans with no real hope of a NYC trip in the for foreseeable future, this is my lot. All I have to go by is the soundtrack recordings and maybe a few youtube videos. As of right now only two of the four nominated musicals have released their albums onto CD, so my perspective is currently pretty narrow, although my interest is through the roof!

I’ve had the Shrek CD in my car for a few weeks now. It’s very cute and very fun with a few really good songs, but it doesn’t exactly scream “best musical”. I’ve heard a little bit of Billy Elliot here and there, and it sounds very good so I’m not surprised it is the favorite. The “Electricity” number is especially standout, expect to see that one bring down the house during the show’s Tony performance. I don’t know anything really about the other two, but I haven’t see a lot of buzz being generated from them so I don’t think they are game changers.

Surely someone has seen a musical or two this season, please share your opinions and enlighten me:D

Bah - musicals! Doesn’t anyone care about plays? The Norman Conquests is wonderful (I’ve seen 2 of the 3 parts and am trying to figure out if I can make the 3rd), and I’m seeing God of Carnage tomorrow, so I’ll try to remember to report back.

CyclopticXander, you said it. Shrek was cute, but IMO not Best Musical material. And the absence of 9 to 5 is mind-boggling to some, although I haven’t seen that one yet. Rock of Ages doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell, and personally I didn’t dig Next to Normal as much as everyone else. My prediction: Billy Elliot will sweep most of their nominations, including Best Musical.

Rachael Rage, have you seen Exit the King? HIGHLY recommended, if you haven’t. I’m also hoping to catch 33 Variations before it closes.

I’m assuming the title character is featured in this number, so the question then becomes–which of the 3 nominated B.E.'s will perform on the show?

I’m sure we can expect all three to perform, which will be nice to see.

Nope, but I usually only catch 1-2 Broadway shows a year (and about 400 billion Off- and Off-Off- Bway shows, or maybe it just feels like that many). My Broadway average is higher this year because I lucked into some free tix.
