Too old to party -- beer gives me painful gas.

Bucking the odds I’m still around and drinking beer!!!

I did seek a medical professional’s advice. They said “Quit drinking beer.” I immediately sought another doctor as I’ll have no truck with such quackery.

Actually, I haven’t eaten another banana in the time since I first posted about this…and I still miss them. The doc suspects possibly a small ulcer the beer irritates. I have added some additional observations. If I drink beer when I am more dehydrated than I should be, it will be a problem. I’ve learned to detect the symptoms of when it is going to cause me pain and stop after about half a glass of beer.

Rainy,
Glad to hear you are still around. I get the same excruciating trapped gas pain from beer, white wine, champagne (which is the same as white wine with bubbles), bananas, and peanuts. I have had the issue for 10+ years. I have been unable to pinpoint the cause or a cure. I found that I can eat bananas and peanuts without pain if I chew them into mush or if they are blended in a smoothly. I love beer and white wine and want to get back to drinking them but everytime I try again the pain outweighs the pleasure. Cocktails and red wine are not an issue.
Did you find the cause? The particular ingredient that trigger it? A cure?

(Yes, it’s an old thread, I know)

I stopped being able to drink craft beers about 10ish years ago. I went from being just fine with them to getting debilitating/I have to go home heartburn. And, typically, I can feel it starting within the first few sips. If I’m lucky it fades away in a half hour or so, but it’s usually with me for the rest of the night. Luckily it’s only craft beer, domestic light beers don’t seem to do it to me, neither does liquor.
The first thing people always ask me when I tell them is if it’s the hops. I don’t know. I just know to stay away from it now. Luckily I’ve never been a big drinker so no drinking really isn’t an issue for me.
At this point, it’s been so long since I drank any craft beer, it might not even be an issue anymore.

Its not a heartburn issue for me. No acid reflux or similar issues. Just a trapped gas pain in that pit between the bottom on your chest and your stomach. It can take hours to go away when the gas dissipates or I can finally get lucky enough to have several good burps. Craft beer, big brand beer, bottles, drafts, it all the same for me.

Hoping someone would know the common ingredient in beer and white wine that is the trigger but is absent in red wine and spirits.

I will be 68 next month, have been drinking for 51 years. No plans on quitting, and no plans to make plans to quit.

I often get acid reflux when I drink, but I’m not letting that stop me. I just finished my second gin+cranberry juice, with lime garnish, as I type. I take an OTC 150 MG ranitidine (“Zantac”) before I drink and it takes care of things – for now anyways.

Drinking alcohol, pickin’ the guitar, and BSing with other old guys at the diner is about all I have left in life, so I’m livin’ to the fullest.

My Daddy ate rolaids like candy when he was drinking. Which was daily. Always had rolaids with him. Not Tums. He claimed they wouldn’t work for that horrible gas pain.
ETA hiatal hernia?

Never have been able to pinpoint the cause. Some wines, especially some varieties of white will trigger it in a sip. Like others have mentioned, I’ve just gotten good at the work-arounds. I used to take a antacid before drinking. I’ve stopped doing that now. Some beers that I like and have often are fine so long as I’m well hydrated. My high blood pressure med is basically a diuretic, so I have to really pay attention to avoid getting a little dehydrated. The correlation between dehydrated and pain from beer seems to always be there. Also like others have mentioned, sometimes I just have to stop. My wife knows when I push a half finished glass in her direction what’s up. Luckily we have the same taste in beers. Never trust a hoppy women  … I like my women malty.
