Tools of the Trade

I was just ordering one of the Chapman miniature ratchet tool kits as a gift for someone when I though of starting this thread. Those of you who are unfamiliar with products made by Chapman Manufacturing might want to visit their site. The approaching holidays make their model 7331 kit a superb gift giving idea for any mechanic, hobbyist or technically oriented person. Even a single use of this kit can pay for its relatively modest price (~$35.[sup]00[/sup]) with the time saved and quality of work performed. The ability to work in tight spaces and produce high quality results makes this a no-brainer for any tool box. Nearly every technician in Silicon Valley owns or has used one of these kits while working on semiconductor fabrication machinery. I first saw one of these miniature tool sets in 1980 and was instantly convinced as to their quality and utility. Needless to say (then why say it?), I own three of these sets.

Besides the ubiquitous Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, and their incredible pocket tool, there are also Mag Lite flashlights, Xcelite screwdrivers, Bondhus ball drivers and Klein hand tools. Although I’ve seen their quality slip a little in recent years, Starrett is still worthy of mention for their high level of quality. In a tool related vein there are the justly legendary Gerstner hardwood machinist’s tool boxes (and their hardwood attache case, drool). Also worth mentioning are the more affordable Kennedy tool boxes as well.

I’m hoping that others will check in with suggestions about high quality tools that they have used in their work or hobbies. Fine tools are the lifeblood of quality craftsmanship and working without them is truly one of the most frustrating experiences.

Have you ever ordered from McMaster-Carr? Total tool orgy. The brands aren’t always shown, but, man, what selection.

The best thing about McMaster-Carr is the fact that everything is shipped overnight. Whether it’s a bag of nails or an air conditioner, 24 hours later, you have it on your doorstep. I’ve had their catalog on my desk for over twenty years.
