Tooth knocked out

I was at a party last night and someone tripped and knocked their front tooth out. Which got me to thinking, what exactly does a dentist do when a tooth gets knocked out? According to some sites on the internet, the tooth can be saved, but I couldn’t find any sites that say exactly what the procedure is.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

The best way is to put the tooth back in its socket. Then see a dentist pronto, as in right now. Do not handle the root, avoid rinsing the tooth unless it is grossly contaminated. The tooth will need to be splinted to hold it in place and will need root canal treatment.
