Present from my wife, over a dozen years ago. I had to read about how to use it, because the one person I knew who owned one had never done a low-and-slow. Now they’re in every other Atlanta backyard.
It’s been one of the best gifts I’ve ever received.
It’s worth the money, if you can find a way to swing it. I use it a lot over the holidays to roast large pieces of beef. The subtle, but noticeable, smokey flavor it imparts to a prime rib roast is fantastic, to say nothing of the crust. It’s nice to be able to do 750+ and 225 on the same grill/smoker.
I know. It sounds like an awesome setup, but I’ll have to wait until someone gifts it to me. I have the money for one, but I just can’t bring myself to spend it. Hell, I’ve been agonizing for years about getting an iPad–and I can even write that off as a business expense–and I just can’t bring myself to buy one. Guess I’m a cheap bastard.
No, we’re basically the same way, and are even in the exact same boat regarding an iPad. We make some big purchases (just bought a D7100), but they take a lot of time and research, and we both have to sign off on them. I totally understand.
On the plus side, I’ve been happy with every big purchase I’ve made, so, hmm…
Actually, my dream is a wood-fired hearth oven. I can see myself one day laying down the thousands of dollars for one of those puppies, but it’ll have to wait to our next house at least. Plus I think I’ll have an easier time getting my wife on board with promises of wood fired pizzas vs promises of barbecue.
