A few that haven’t been mentioned yet:
L. Frank Baum’s Oz books
Gordon Dickson’s Childe Cycle
Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series
Robert E. Howard’s Conan and Kull stories
H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos (though he never called it that…)
Oops, Conan has been mentioned.
:smack:
All of these are very excellent! (except Lemony Snicket Stupid series. LOTS of continuity and logical errors even a child wouldn’t (shouldn’t) forgive. How stupid does “Snicket” think kids are?)
A great reading list! Great thread!
One more to add.
Heechee Saga by Frederick Pohl, especially Gateway.
Also thoroughly enjoyed OSC’s Homecoming Series.
I am fond of Jack Vance’s the Demon Prince series.
And while we’re at it, how about Jack Vance’s Planet of Adventure series?
They’ve recently released a one volume compendium of the 10 Amber books, which I picked up and quite thoroughly enjoyed.
But,
I started a thread on this very series a while back, explaining why I considered the first volume to be the worst book I’ve ever read, barring L. Ron Hubbard’s excretions. Blech. Read this thread carefully, Dob, and go read some REALLY good stuff.
