Top 50 High School Movies of All Time

Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly

As I went through the list from 50 down, I couldn’t believe how low some of the films were ranked (To Sir With Love #27? Grease #21?), but then I got to the top 10. Can’t say I have a problem with any of them.

The list made me come to two conclusions:

  1. What a great genre High School films are, and
  2. Entertainment Weekly got something right.

“Back to the Future” is way, way, way too low on the list.

I would have flipped the first two, but other than that, it’s pretty close to my list.

I got bored clicking through all the “Continue” links and waiting for the next page to load. Is there just a list somewhere?

Good list, but one MAJOR oversight… IF… starring Malcolm Mcdowell, should easily be top 10.

I’m surpirsed Sixteen Candles was so low on the list.

Only 5 movies per page? What the fuck? That’s annoying.

get to the last 10, and its ONE per page :frowning:

Harry Potter as a High School Movie?

OK, it may take place at a high school (does it?) but it’s definitely not a High School Movie.

I’m reasonably happy with the 50 they chose but the rankings I find a bit odd. Back to the Future is way too low along with Ferris Beuler. Mean Girls was pretty good, but 12? I dunno, I could go on and on. What they should have done is given a top 10 and then 40 honorable mentions or something.

I love Boyz N The Hood and it is one of my favorite movies but I have a hard time classifying it as a high school movie.

I had to go through twice to make sure I didn’t just miss it, but Blackboard Jungle isn’t on the list. Seems like an oversight to me.

Wierd Science?
Varsity Blues?
Mallrats?

I had the same thought; I was hopeful, when it kept not showing up, that this boded well for its high placement on the list. I was, however, glad to see that Rebel Without a Cause made the top 5, although I might have put it in the first couple slots if it were my list.

And where, may I ask, is Buffy?

Have you seen the movie?

While I was pleasantly surprised to find Rock ‘n’ Roll High School on the list at all (#18), it really should be bumped up to #3.

I agree, this is a tremendous gaff not to have this on, but instead the glurgy “To Sir With Love” which is merely okay.

On other matters, I will never understand the outright hatred of the Buffy movie – it was done as a comedy and succeeded beautifully at its purpose.

Won’t load for me.

Anyone wanna clue me in where Dazed & Confused fell?

Breakfast CLub?

Breakfast Club is #1

Dazed and Confused is #3

(Fast Times at Ridgemont High is #2, in case you wondered)

Blackboard Jungle should be in the #1 slot, instead of nonexistant.

Omitting Blackboard Jungle was a major gaffe. I’d also complain that Some Kind of Wonderful didn’t crack the top 50, but perhaps there are enough John Hughes films there already.

Otherwise this is a pretty good list. Out of the top 10, I can’t see a single choice that isn’t worth renting even if you’re not a fan of this genre:

  1. The Breakfast Club
  2. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
  3. Dazed and Confused
  4. Rebel without a Cause
  5. Heathers
  6. American Graffiti
  7. Clueless
  8. Boyz N the Hood
  9. Election
  10. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

In particular, if you haven’t seen “Heathers”, “Boyz N the Hood”, or “Election”, you’re really missing out.
