As I went through the list from 50 down, I couldn’t believe how low some of the films were ranked (To Sir With Love #27? Grease #21?), but then I got to the top 10. Can’t say I have a problem with any of them.
I’m reasonably happy with the 50 they chose but the rankings I find a bit odd. Back to the Future is way too low along with Ferris Beuler. Mean Girls was pretty good, but 12? I dunno, I could go on and on. What they should have done is given a top 10 and then 40 honorable mentions or something.
I love Boyz N The Hood and it is one of my favorite movies but I have a hard time classifying it as a high school movie.
I had the same thought; I was hopeful, when it kept not showing up, that this boded well for its high placement on the list. I was, however, glad to see that Rebel Without a Cause made the top 5, although I might have put it in the first couple slots if it were my list.
Omitting Blackboard Jungle was a major gaffe. I’d also complain that Some Kind of Wonderful didn’t crack the top 50, but perhaps there are enough John Hughes films there already.
Otherwise this is a pretty good list. Out of the top 10, I can’t see a single choice that isn’t worth renting even if you’re not a fan of this genre:
The Breakfast Club
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Dazed and Confused
Rebel without a Cause
Heathers
American Graffiti
Clueless
Boyz N the Hood
Election
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
In particular, if you haven’t seen “Heathers”, “Boyz N the Hood”, or “Election”, you’re really missing out.
