Top Chef: Just Desserts

I didn’t expect Erika to go; I figured it would be Danielle for her crappy looking dessert.

Danielle’s dessert looked ot me like a very poor decoration meant for the top of the main dessert. If I were served that I’d be disappointed.

But the bottom line is really flavor, and if the ice cream tasted like soap I’m sure no one can fault the decision. I just wonder if she prepped the machine herself, or if this is another stage management problem. I really think a more detail oriented person needs to be added to the production team for Top Chef across the board. You know, a Sheldon-esque worrier who would check the ovens and fridges to make sure their temperatures were right, etc.

The weird thing is that Erika never said “I tasted it, it seemed fine to me” and none of the other contestants mentioned having tasted it either. I’d think Erika would have said something if she’d tasted it and thought there was nothing wrong with it. Is it really possible that she put it out there without first dipping a spoon in?!?

Yes! Woo Hoo! A great ep by virtue of who got booted and the righteous ego smackdowns involved–though both the relays and the dessert shop wars were really fun in their own right, too.

Yeah, the first thing I thought when Team Diva lost was “Yeah, now Heather gets the can! Whohoo!” So sick of her whiny, poor me attitude. I like that the baker guy that can’t plate is still there and he’s getting better (liked how his malted cake looked any ways). My prediction for final two is Morgan and Yigt (sp?) but I hope baker dude is #3 although it will probably be Zach (who isn’t my least favorite either). Danielle did kind of screw it up in the service portion but still managed to have some decent desserts.

You can’t spell Yigit without a double dose of “I” (funny how every reaction to his behavior is seen by him as a response to him being a “threat”; uh-huh  )

In her defense, in the way the show was cut, they caught Team Diva first when Yigit was still much fresher, while Whisk Me Away dealt with the judges second after they’d already been getting slammed. Still, I’m glad they didn’t win just because of the quality of the food, but also because their overall presentation was better.

I loved this episode and I LOVED watching Team Diva get it in the butt. They needed a kick in their hoity-toity-ness.

So glad Heather’s negativity is outta-there! She was just plain nasty and I hope Danielle goes next. I so want to see Eric (BakerDude) make it to the Final Three. And although he was running a bit behind Heather in the rose piping challenge, his roses were better and her’s sucked! They looked flat and I’m surprised they allowed them…

Fried Dough Ho - The sample roses looked flat, too.

StG

To be fair, Heather’s roses looked like the example roses shown to the teams before the competition started. Eric’s roses were over and above what needed to be done.

Okay - I just re-watched that and you are correct.

I’m still glad she’s gone, roses aside. Zac or Danielle needs to go next!

Well that was a bummer. I really liked Eric. I did like how they ended it by letting him state how the process really made him view himself differently. I sincerely wish him nothing but great success.

And Danielle pulling those goofy freakin’ faces! Enough already!

Yeah, Eric was a class act. I wanted to see him go further. He certainly seemed to have earned the respect of the judges and contestants!

I think the bit about Danielle taking long showers was funny, because she always looks greasy to me!

I hope Eric makes it as Fan Favorite – he certainly was the only one who was less snarky against the others and truly changing and expanding beyond his comfort zone (although he certainly failed to do so in this episode).

I was really surprised to see Yigit be one of the top two in the Quickfire challenge. Sugar vase aside, I thought his sugar flowers were fairly mundane. I was more impressed with Danielle’s use of candied orange peel and what they described as utilizing too many different techniques, I found innovative – even thought she should have considered all sides and created bouquets that would hide the ugly backs.

The elimination challenge made me wonder if any of these people had ever attended a Tea before. I am a big tea-goer and it is true, the existence of chocolate is rare; these treats are scones, miniature tartlets, delicate cookies, petit fores, etc.

Next week we’ll lose another (Danielle or Zack?) and we’ll be down to the final three!

I really hope Zack goes the distance. He’s just so enthusiastic and open, I love the energy he brings to the show.

My enduring image of him though, will be after Heather told him to “shut-up” for the second time. He just sort of spun in place, and then headed off in eight directions at once, eventually just walking and turning back and forth like a cardboard duck in a shooting gallery. It was just absolutely precious; he was utterly shocked by her behavior.

I wish I had a life so civil that behavior like that could throw me.

I was amused at the “is she using the bran cereal as a scrub in there, or what?!” pondering.

And yeah, that was very touching, to hear Eric affirming to himself that he is a chef.

He kind of gets on my nerves; that energy is charming in small doses but it NEVER LETS UP. I could definitely understand when Morgan complained about his incessant chatter

I finally tuned back in after skipping 6 episodes. I couldn’t stand some of the early chefs. Especially the one that threw hissy fits.

Glad to see the professionals are the only ones left. Last night was more like the TC I love. Interesting seeing what they can do with sugar. I liked the guys vase. Shame that it broke.

I was hoping Just Deserts would give more time to really create some special cakes and candies. But, they stuck with the TC format and everything is done in a rush. The food flurry is fun to watch but doesn’t give time to make anything special.

While I don’t love Morgan, I just don’t think he broke the vases on purpose. I think that other than Seth and Heather, what I liked least about this season was the cheating accusations.

I think the twist of taking the chocolate away from them was handled pretty unfairly. The way they did it penalized some chefs and left others completely unaffected. It’s no surprise that the two on the bottom were two who had planned chocolate as a big part of their dishes. If they didn’t want them to use chocolate, they should have either said so before they went shopping, or given those who had planned on using chocolate another chance to buy replacement materials.

While I see your point, I’d think planning to use chocolate for a tea is off the mark to start with.

Didn’t Morgan break only one vase? And Yigit broke the other two himself? I deleted it already, so I can’t check.

The quick-fire challenge for this episode lasted three hours! Not exactly quick! I think the editing just made it feel like the usual 20 min.

I think Morgan only broke one vase, and the vases were obviously too thin to work with.
