A Christmas Carol (Patrick Stewart version)
Conspiracy (not Conspiracy Theory starring Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson, but the movie about the Wannsee Conference starring Kenneth Branagh and Colin Firth)
The Butterfly Effect (with the altered ending; haven’t seen the original ending but it sounds dreadful)
Grosse Pointe Blank
Alfie (Jude Law remake, haven’t seen the original but can’t for the life of me figure out why this version was so disliked, even by Jude Law himself)
Ten Things I Hate About You
Cashback (although it was someone on this board who turned me onto this movie, so it might be on someone else’s list)
D.E.B.S. (one of these days I’m going to write a review stating in no unclear terms why this movie is so underrated)
Jersey Girl (sure, go in expecting another Clerks, and you will be disappointed; I went in with no expectations and had a blast)
Mirrormask (apparently made to be a Labyrinth for the 21st century, no surprise I loved it then)
I’m not going to try not to duplicate anyone else’s - for one thing, there are already a lot of duplicates, and for another, movies that some of you seem to think are on NO one else’s list are movies I can’t imagine people NOT enjoying.
I figure this is the top ten movies we’ll watch over and over, but which we don’t figure would make any “10 Best” lists anywhere else. I call them “laundry movies” - when I have to fold a cubic assload of laundry, I’ll pop one of these in and turn my brain right off.
In no particular order:
- The Fifth Element
- Sky High
- The Day After Tomorrow
- Sneakers
- The Usual Suspects
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith
- Mystery Men
- Galaxy Quest
- Dave
There’s a tie for 10th, a three-way tie, among movies which have only hit my attention in the last year:
10: Hellboy, Ghost Rider, and Iron Man
Three cheers for the comic adaptation trifecta!
- Jumping Jack flash
- X Files : I want to believe
- Clue
- Idle hands
- White chicks
- Any of the scary movies
- Hocus Pocus
- Loaded Weapon
- Ruthless People
- Ernest scared stupid
I have other films that I absolutely love but I’m sure a few people would also have it on their top ten so these are my not so popular top ten!
Sin City
Betty Blue
Scanners
Kung Fu Hustle
Time Bandits
Spacehunter: Adventures Of The Forbidden Zone
Tron
Equilibrium
Jason And The Argonauts
Something Wild
True Romance
Again, not quite ‘feel good’ movies, but all are films I can watch repeatedly and still enjoy.
p.s. mswas picked 5 films I could have had on my list, and there are plenty of others scattered throughout the above posts.
Zulu
The Black Stallion
Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein (Seriously)
Gigi
Spies Like Us
Alice In Wonderland (Disney)
Bedazzled (1967)
Pennies From Heaven (Steve Martin version)
Adventures of Don Juan (Erroll Flynn) I could have mentioned a half-dozen of
his films.
That movie whose name I can’t remember starring Arnold Schwarzeneggar as a
spy who’s wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, thinks he is a computer salesman.
Looking at the top of my list in IMDB none of these have been mentioned so some should stand up. The Aussie movies most of you won’t have even heard of, but I could sit down and watch all of these any time, except the first one which is one of those “great movie, glad I saw it, will never watch it again” things .
25th Hour
Badlands
3:10 To Yuma (1957 version)
Hombre
Das Boot
The Boys (Aussie with evil David Wenham)
Dog Day Afternoon
Deliverance
The Caine Mutiny
The Elephant Man
Erskineville Kings (Aussie with evil Hugh Jackman)
In a Lonely Place
The Interview (Aussie with evil?!? Hugo Weaving)
The Last Detail
Proof (Aussie with young Hugo Weaving and young Russell Crowe)
Rocket Science
Sexy Beast
The Verdict
October Sky
Lantana (Aussie with no one evil and one of the best resolutions to a murder mystery imaginable)
Ghostbusters
Thief
Monty Python’s Life of Brian
The Princess Bride
Slapshot
Serenity
Caddyshack
The Blues Brothers
The Right Stuff
Apollo 13
Besides the ones I list above:
The Last of Sheila
The Odessa File
The Last Battle (Le Dernier Combat)
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
The Lost Missile
My go-to movies are all oldies:
Them!
The Little Foxes
Woman on the Beach
Jezebel
A Catered Affair
I Remember Mama
How Green Was My Valley
The Magnificent Ambersons
Love, Actually.
Hearts In Atlantis.
Eternal Sunshine of the Heartless Mind
Signs
Life as a House
Better Off Dead
Down With Love
Boys in the Hood
Sliding Doors
Grave of the Fireflies
- 42nd Street
- Out of the Past
- Scarlet Street
- Kiss of Death
- Double Indemnity
- The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
7. Gold Diggers of 1933 - **Another Part of the Forest ** (prequel to Little Foxes)
-
Too Late For Tears (aka Killer Bait)
10.** Pickup On South Street**
All oldies, all classics.
Not sure if I’ll have any repeats on anyone, but this gives me a perfect opportunity to pimp out two of the funniest, most underrated movies of all times – which I will place at #2 & #3 just for the sake of clarity (can’t supplant my all-time #1 fav, and the rest are basically off the top of my head):
- The Warriors
- Running Scared (with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, not the new one starring whoever that stars)
- Let It Ride (Richard Dreyfuss - horse racing movie)
- Killing Zoe
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch
- Hamburger Hill
- Die Hard (just the first one)
- Rounders
- The Natural
- Boondock Saints
Well, it took me a while to think of my list. It isn’t necessarily a top ten, and I’m sure that there are other people who would like some of those movies, and maybe all of them. But they’re movies that do something special for me; like a joke and I’m the only one in the room who’s laughing, and that makes it funnier. Other people can like them, but I love them. I still remember the first time I saw L.A. Story on cable.
And one to add to the list:
Chasing Amy
(I’ve only seen it once. That scene in the truck hit a little close to home.)
Glengarry Glen Ross was a truly excellent film.
Great picks. Anyone who thinks “sexy” means coming on stage and shaking your boobs and ass the way so-called “sexy” singers and dancers do today should see Ruby Keeler dancing the final number in 42nd Street.
Billy Elliot. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, in every respect — from production values, to casting, to acting, to directing, to writing. The whole thing. I think it is a four-star movie. In fact, I think it is a nearly perfect movie.
In no particular order (and taking pains to avoid titles already listed by others)
Santa Sangre
The Fog Of War
Bad Taste
Orgazmo
Dogma
American Pimp
Bowfinger
Primer
Electra Glide In Blue
The Fifth Element
honorable mention to A Christmas Story, Spaceman, Undercover Brother and Koyaanisqatsi
Hmmm. I see a trend of comedies, documentaries, and weirdness. WOOT!
Movies I love that I never expect anyone else to have even heard of:
Round Midnight
The Conversation
Hopscotch
Hero at Large
Movies I love that I expect people of a certain age to have at least heard of:
Silver Streak
Mr. Mom
Being There
Again, no particular order:
Cold Feet (Tom Waits!)
Harvey
True Romance
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (in spite of Keanu’s “Oh, Meeena…”)
Finding Nemo
Allegro Non Tropo (sp?)
The Lion in Winter (Yeah, it would probably make a lot of lists, but I don’t care)
Across the Universe
Freeway
Cruel Intentions
The Fisher King
Raising Arizona
Oops - more than 10!
A lot of the movies picked so far were exceptionally popular and/or highly critically acclaimed. Many have won one or more Academy Awards or were nominated for more than a few. I don’t think really popular, critically acclaimed movies are quite in the spirit of the OP.
