Top Western Movies

High Noon

Most of my favs have already been mentioned but I thought of a couple of others.
Burt Lancaster made some good westerns. I liked

Apache
Vera Cruz
The Scalp hunters { very good}
The Kentuckian, {maybe not a western}
The Professionals
and my fav of Burt’s “Valdez is coming”

How about Peck?
Duel in the Sun
The Gunfighter
Yellow Sky
and my Peck fav “The Bravados”

Chato’s Land a Charles Bronson flick

and if you want sci fi with your western try West World.

good thread. I’ll have to check Netflix for a lot of these.

Serenity

what?!

Any of the Randolph Scott movies directed by Budd Boetticher.

Once Upon a Time in the West if for no other reason thatn to see Henry Fonda as a bad guy. The opening scene at the train station is fantastic as well.

Best Western Movies huh?
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Buono, il brutto, il cattivo., Il (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly)
Ride Lonesome (Thank you Middleman for bringing this one to my attention)
The Unforgiven (Made in 1960 and starring Audrey Hepburn! Burt Lancaster is in it too)
¡Three Amigos! (It’s just good times)

the Cowboys has been mentioned exactly once, so I’d like to put it up before the jury again. One of eight times where the Duke doesn’t make it to the end of the movie, it’s also one of the first (if not the first times Bruce Dern appears as a loony badguy.

Also, to expand the horizon a bit, how about a ‘Western’ set in Oz: Quigley Down Under Alan Rickman hires sharpshooter Tom Selleck to clear his station of varmits. Turns out, to Quigley’s dismay, he meant aboriginals. It’s the only Tom Selleck movie I actually like.

Yeah boy. If it counts as a western Quigley is a great choice. Watched it a bunch of times.

I also enjoyed him in Monte Walsh about the end of the cowboy era and The Shadow Riders was pretty good.

You list off Burt’s westerns but omit the very best one–Ulzana’s Raid?!?!? For shame! :wink:

Tombstone
Ride the High Country
Stagecoach
Shane

The top 10 westerns according to me;

  1. Silverado - what can I say I love the story and the characters
  2. Winchester '73 - Fantastic story with a one of the best sidekicks
  3. The Son’s of Katie Elder - Probably the best John Wayne movie
  4. A Fist Full of Dollars - The first and best spaghetti western not to mention a highly quotable movie.
  5. High Noon - The best of the psychological westerns I love it but can only watch it occasionally
  6. Tombstone - Probably the most action packed western on my list
  7. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon - Great music and John Wayne plays his best role.
  8. Chism - The supporting case around Wayne really carries this move interesting look at Billy the kid.
  9. El Dorado - The first western I ever watched, such a good story they made it twice.
  10. 3:10 to Yuma (original) - Another one of the psychological ones but the story is so much better then the new one if less action packed.
