I had to google what “sampling” was. Didn’t we used to call these “adaptations”? I’m thinking of things like the Chopin Polonaise in Perry Como’s Till the End of Time, or Eric Carmen using Rachmaninov in All by Myself.

Sampling is different – it’s taking a brief piece of recorded music and using it essentially as an “instrument” in another piece. That piece can be a vocal, a guitar riff, a drum beat, keys, record-scratching, what have you.

To illustrate using my own selection in this list, cue the Utah Saints video to about 1:00 to hear a short section of Kate Bush’s vocal from “Cloudbusting” run through repeatedly in “Something Good”. That’s not Bush having re-recorded the lyrics – that’s a loop of the vocal from the “Cloudbusting” recording.
