TopText links

On many sites i see there are some dumb links that just look like sites are trying to plug places. For instance movie is usually underlined and if u click it it takes u somewhere where u can buy dvds (4 for 99 Cents! -lol). Ive seen other links to expedia and other crap. When u hold your cursor over it, it says TopText link on the bottom left(on explorer).

Whats up with this?
it just bugs me

You have unwittingly installed scumware.

Download and run ad-aware and it will get rid of TopText (and half-a-dozen other shitty things you didn’t know were spying on you.)

It seems to have done something nasty to your o, u, and ’ keys as well.

sorry

ic, ok thx
any ideas on what the scumware is… perhaps i can try to find it on my pc

As Larry Mudd has already mentioned… running ad-aware, (click on his link, posted above) will rid you of this for you.

Also, as a helpful and friendly piece of advice, you can take all the time you want to compose your message. Not everyone may know offhand that “ic, ok thx” means “I see, okay, thanks.” Clear communication is a benefit to us all.

Cue rainbow

The more you know.

gyt_fx, the scumware/spyware we know you have is TopText – the most common route for it to find it’s scummy way onto your hard-drive is through a bundling deal with Kazaa. The good people at Kazaa took their thirty pieces of silver in exchange for including TopText as an optional part of the install process. Pay attention when you’re clicking through that stuff-- there are often little boxes that you’ll regret neglecting to “un-check.”

Realplayer is another big offender for sneaking nasty stuff onto your computer.

Many folks offering “free” software make their cash from these sort of shady deals-- most commonly they’re invisible things that run in the background, and pass information about you along to advertisers-- what sort of webpages you visit, whatever e-mail addresses it can find, that sort of thing. Others just fob advertising off on you, either as pop-ups which appear to originate from the web-page you’re viewing. (Say… when did the SDMB start accepting advertising dollars from Steve Martin’s Penis Cream?,) or even altering the content of the page, like TopText does.

Most people would agree that the people who create this sort of invasive crap are just the sort of mindless jerks who’ll be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes.

Do install and run AdAware, it’s a painless procedure and will save you a lot of frustration.

Also, don’t feel like folks are ganging up on you about the chat-room shorthand you’ve been using. It’s not personal-- it’s just something that isn’t done around here, and it really is helpful and friendly advice that you’re getting. Lots of people show up at the door with habits they’ve picked up from “the rest of the internet,” don’t let the initial criticism chase you off. You will find you get better responses from folks if you take a little time to spell out words in full and stuff like that, though. (A great benefit of this approach is that, when everything is spelled correctly and your grammar is passable, it takes a lot longer for people to write you off as an idiot. Believe me, I know.)

Cheers.
