Tories congratulate Native Canadians on India's independence day

From canada.com:

I must say, it saves us a hell of a lot of effort to have a right-wing party that goes out of its way to make itself a laughing stock.

I’d consider supporting Mr. Harper, but he hasn’t proved his jet-ski piloting abilities to my satisfaction.

I laughed.

And I laughed.

And then I laughed some more.

Although, to be fair, what’s a First Nations organization doing with “Indian” in it’s name in this day and age?

Hah! That’s nothing. You should have seen what Harper did when that Newfoundland won “Best in Show” this year at the Westminster dog show!

Well, just goes to show that Martin can call an election anytime he wants. Sadly, the official opposition appears to be a joke.

and did anyone else catch Belinda on the front of the Star a week or so back? Apparently, she’s Bill Clinton’s new flame. Hillary is said to be pissed.

I saw that. Got a good chuckle out of it, too.

Reminds me of playing cricket in St. Catherines. Someone at work asked me about the team. “It’s mostly Indians,” I said. “Oh,” she said, “I thought they played lacrosse.”

Though I agree with LaurAnge that that organization name is confusing…after all, Ontario has a significant Indian population. I mean, of people of Indian descent. I mean, people from India and their descendants.

Every person of that particular ethnic origin I have ever met called themselves an “Indian” or by their particular band’s moniker. “First Nations,” “Aboriginal” and the like are terms mostly used by white folks.

As to the OP, I wonder what Harper would do if he were to find himself at a Blue Jays game when the Cleveland Indians were in town. His head would probably explode.

So Canuck “indians” don’t call themselves Native Canadians?

Though it may not relate to Canadia, I used to work with an American Indian guy from Idaho, Dancing Badger, and here’s what he has to say on the subject:

Yeah, at this point, I think many liberals are even wishing for a credible conservative opposition.

Strangely enough, the latest polls show BOTH the Liberals and Conservatives are up in the ratings, at the expense of everyone else; 43 to 32, which constitutes both a majority Liberal win and a reasonably strong Opposition. This particular story hasn’t really caught a lot of news.

“What do you mean, I don’t need my binoculars and Petersen guide? How else are you going to watch for blue jays?”

You know, now that you mention it, no they don’t. At least, the Indians whom I’ve known personally don’t. On the rare occasion that it comes up, they call themselves Mohawks or Ojibway or Metis, as the case may be. Or just Indian. (Obviously, this wouldn’t qualify as any sort of scientific sampling of course.)

But it’s never been an issue, that I’m aware of. I think the Indians whom I know, some of whom I grew up with, might sort of either roll their eyes or chuckle quietly at being called Native Canadians, like how they laugh at the term First Nations. It’s gub’mint-speak. A lot of people around here, Indian or otherwise, feel the same way about the term “multiculturalism” and other such PC labels.

Well, to be fair, not just the government in Ottawa.
