In the states, tornados typically form in the southwest portion of a thunderstorm. Does the same hold in Australia, or do the twisters form to the northwest ?
Twisters, as you would know probably them, do not occur in Australia.
Like tornadoes in other parts of the globe, in Australia they are extremely localised. As an example (I’ll see if I can find a cite) in a severe storm in Sydney a tree was destroyed by a micro-tornado in the front yard of a house, and yet the washing remained on the clothes line in the back yard.
The recent stormin Bendigo (18/05/2003 has been classified as a mini-tornado.
