It’s supposed to be mostly cloudy tonight down in south Florida. Damn, this will be the first one I get to see. I fell asleep during my last attempt.
This will be so cool. I’ve never seen a lunar eclipse before. I’ll need to make sure I wake up early so I can be outside at 10:00. I don’t have to leave for work until 10:35 and I don’t have to be inside until 10:45 so I’ll get to see most of it.
IIRC, my first total eclipse of the moon was in 1961 at 33,000’ over the Caribbean in an DC-8, was going from Merida Mexico to New Orleans … When the pilot told us to watch, everyone rushed to one side of the plane. It caused the plane to roll a little. The pilot had asked us to move slowly, we didn’t
I wonder if there was one Doper-like person in the crowd way back when primitives thought a dragon was consuming the moon. The conversation probably went something like:
Ignorant Savages: Oh noes, a dragon is eating the moon! Everybody to take off clothes and dance around the fire naked!!
Ancient Doper: Will you people stop with the “dragon” bullshit already? I’ve told you over and over again that it’s just the earth’s shadow. Here, look through this piece of bamboo with the clear rocks in each end. Do you see a dragon? Well, do you? Of course not. Ya know, the real problem here is that when history is written, the only thing people will remember is that we were all dumb enough to think a giant lizard was eating the fucking moon, when it’s clearly thousands of miles away, and a dragon couldn’t possibly fly that far.
IS: Hey, ixnay with the adow-sha, man. This is the only way we get to see naked chicks.
The thing about those rituals to chase away the dragon (or whatever) and bring back the moon or sun- they always worked.
If someone starts banging on pots and pans or anything like that to scare away whatever’s eating the moon anywhere near my house tonight, they’re going to wish they only had dragons or eclipse demons to contend with once I get hold of them…
and of course the forecast for St Louis this evening is Partly cloudy in the evening then becoming mostly cloudy. Low around 15
Well, right now, I can see the full moon. Whether or not the clouds will get in the way is another matter.
So how’s the eclipse going? Has the moon entered the umbra yet?
No noise here, but there is liquor, rice and incense out in the outdoor Kamidana for the little kami tonight. Eclipses weird me out. Cognitive dissonance on my part, of course. I KNOW what causes them, but still, (shivers).
Here in Kansas it went total several minutes ago. We have some clouds but the moon was clear.
It’s freakin’ cold (9 degrees F) to be standing out on my front stoop, but I just have to take one step out my front door to see it. It’s about half-way to totality right now.
Quick which side of the moon is saturn supposed to be on???
I can see it clearly now, right outside my front door. It’s almost completely shadowed at this point. It’s really cool!
I was out a little while ago when the moon was about half-eclipsed and had a pretty good view. However, it’s “partly cloudy” out here, and now some clouds are drifting over the moon, making visibility of the eclipse intermittent.
Crystal clear and awesome here in Toronto.
(And bloody cold.)
The far side!!!
Not only is there cloud cover here, there’s also fog. I can’t even see where the moon -is-… on second thought, maybe I went out when it was a total! :smack:
Wow, I thought it was going to be cloudy and we wouldn’t be able to see a thing. It rained this morning, and there were enormous clouds in the late afternoon, but it magically cleared up and visibility is amazing. We’ve been watching it go from a sliver of light to totality, and we took the chance to show the kids some stars as well. (We’re doing astronomy right now and learned about star magnitude and how they die yesterday, so we looked at Sirius, Rigel and Betelgeuse etc.)
The left side. I,m watching it now, posting from phone. Gorgeous!
Yep, left and down. Very nice! We just went out again so the kids could say goodnight to it.
It’s a gorgeously clear night here, and I can see the eclipse from my bedroom window…quite lovely. And i don’t have to bundle up and go outside. Wish I knew where the binoculars were, though…
