This is geared toward the vocal aspect of the syndrome as opposed to the motor side of it.
I’m wondering if this disorder is mainly confined to the United States, or is it international? Maybe it’s just me and maybe I just don’t get out much… but I’ve never heard this disorder occuring in other cultures. A Spanish speaking person blurting out Spanish profanity? A Chinese speaking person blurting out Chinese profanity?
I vaguelly recall a prog on TV some time ago in the UK it might have been ‘The Visit’ or something like it.
Anyway there was a young man on it with this problem,he’d talk to someone and whilst they were talking back he’d burst out with expletives insulting the speaker but not shouting more like an angry too loud stage whisper.
I thought it was unique.I never realised it had a name.
I saw that program to. The poor guy was doing work placment in a flower nursery .
And since its a neurological disorder I would say it’s a world wide problem and not just confined to english speakers . Here’s some stuff about it.
Isn’t there a related condition that causes inappropriate laughter?

One is that perhaps people in the Third World are too busy just trying to stay alive and make a living to have time to worry about whether there might be something wrong with the kid down the street who blurts out obscenities, or twitches spasmodically.
Or perhaps people in the Third World have less access to the kind of medical care that would (a) know what Tourette’s syndrome was, and (b) be able to do something about it. Most health care in the Third World tends to be pretty simplistic.
Or maybe it’s just that the American media is only interested in sound-bite-suitable medical problems that affect Americans.
Tourette’s syndrome isn’t cute, or pretty, not like little children with cystic fibrosis. What network is going to send a news team to investigate Tourette’s syndrome among the slums of Calcutta? If they’re going to send a news team to Calcutta, by golly they’re going to get the most bang for their buck–they’re going cover a proven ratings-grabber, like poverty, or a typhoon, or a ferry capsizing, or Mother Teresa.

Shit, that’s a great fucking question. But even the fucking Mormons say “oh, blast!” when they fuck up, so you’re probably shit outa luck in finding a culture that doesn’t fucking utter obscenities. After the hell all, “politeness” implies that there is something the fuck else, right?
Tourettes can manifest itself in yelling obscenities, but that’s not the only way. It can also mean doing other socially-inappropriate activities like yelling racial slurs, screaming, certain twitches, etc.
The guy in the t.v. programme mentioned earlier on in this tread did all of the above and also spat into the food of his family while they were eating dinner . He then always got very angry with himself which made his condition worse.
There is about a 99% chance that I have Tourette’s. I still need to see a neurologist to know for sure, but my psychiatrist has pretty much diagnosed it. I don’t do the vocalisations except to sometimes grunt under my breath. The main thing I have is the blinking, the huff-breathing, the neck and nose twitches, the rhythmic tapping, etc. So yes, regardless of whether obscenities are known, the disorder can still be a living hell.
