From personal experience they can be very hard to detect even in shallow water. (Not actually stood on thankfully)

They scared me the most as a kid.

That is not exactly true. Although there is Coloradoite in Kilgoorie (I imagine that is your source for this true presence of mercury telluride, both metals that are venomous), the most poisonous mineral in the world is cinabrium, mined in Spain for centuries, followed by orpiment and stibnite, not present in Australia. Coloradoite is poisonous but is not worse than asbestos, arsenopyrite, torbernite or chalcantite or even galena.
