Townsend, TN instead of Gatlinburg, maybe?

I found this site, which looks nice for the kids, and it’s still close to the Smokies. We can still drive into Gatlinburg to pig out on commercial stuff, if we must, although that’s actually what I’m trying to avoid.
So…any feedback on Townsend? I just happened across it on the map.

This information is 14 years old, and thus most likely out of date. But if the touristy aspect of the Smokies is of less appeal than the natural, go with Townsend. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge and even Sevierville are way too crowded with junk stores and come-on places. Townsend (as of 1995) was still more or less rustic and calm. It’s a favorite haunt of bikers (motorcycles) if that’s any help.

The big plus is that it’s nearer Cades Cove which is a must-see if you care about the history of the Smokies.

My vote would be for Townsend. I used to live/work in the area and it is truly beautiful. They call it “The Peaceful Side of the Smokies”. There is Little River with camping and water activities, golfing at Laurel Valley, horseback riding, Tuckaleeche Caverns (incredible) and some good bicycling in the area. It’s also just outside an entrance to the Great Smoky Mtns. so there is excellent hiking/exploring. I sincerely doubt you’ll miss the Gatlinburg “touristy” life.

We stayed in cabins in Townsend four years ago. It was very nice. close to the touristy stuff, far enough away to be quiet.

And yes, don’t forget Cades Cove. Go in the morning or at night when the animals are likely to be out.

Awesome. Thanks, folks. We stayed outside of Gatlinburg last time–I mean MILES outside, on a mountain hillside in an isolated cabin. It was great, but we still had to elbow our way through G-burg every time we went into the park. This way, we can still go to Gatlinburg if we want, but we won’t have to. Lovely.

I went to Townsend when I was a kid-it was gorgeous. We did the trails and horseback riding and everything. I dont remember going to Gatlinburg, but I think I hard somwhere it was more touristy. Townsend was more of a nature town.

Stop by Dollywood while you’re in the area…it was a riot.

I lived in Knoxville for 10 years and if you want to escape the Magic Fun Rides, yes, go to Townsend.
