Trading Spaces 3/22, Or another Crying Pam episode

Johnny, they rerun the most recent shows at noon on Sunday and 4 on Tuesdays.

I personally thought Lauries room was the pits, regardless of color. The shelving unit was 50% unusable (what tha?) the ottoman was pretty pitiful, that scarf tacked to the wall and framed: HUH?!?! That nasty outdoor carpet (BROWN!) The most annoying thing is that if Laurie had merely used a light yellow in this room LIKE SHE ALWAYS DOES all her colors and fabrics would’ve still worked and the brown wouldn’t have been an issue. (And yes, it’s most definately brown. Taupe is brown in the same way that Navy is blue.) I also don’t think “Brown Jessie” was a bitch throughout the episode the way some people are claiming, but I do think her reaction was a bit over the top. (Paige came across as really sweet in this episode too, in fact I think if anyone came across as a bitch in this show it was Laurie! “She thinks she doesn’t like brown.” Girl - GET OVER YOURSELF!)

Edward’s room was great. It was a bit “retro 80’s” but I’m guessing that’ll be the next big style anyway, haha. The only thing I wasn’t too keen on was the already mentioned faux glass window treatments. And now that you mention it, yeah, he shoulda bought a new chair if he was so much under budget. I just enjoy watching Edward because he’s so pleasant and polite. I LOVED it when Amy Wynn told him she made his shelves a little “chunkier” than he requested and she hoped that was ok. He said “No it’s ok, I like it. I especially like it because I know it was more work for you and I appreciate that.” Awwww! The blond homeowner’s reaction was great – jumping up and down because she was so excited!

Re the TS Drinking Game: I’m pretty sure you chug when Laurie says one of her fabrics is “Amaaaaaaaaazing!”

I enjoyed the promos for the Andy Dick episode where Vern is saying “YOU CALL THAT A STRAIGHT LINE?!?!” Mommie Dearest-style. Ha!

MyFootsZZZ: the show was in Las Vegas.

I wasn’t too fond of Laurie’s room. I thought the colors tied together well, but I just wasn’t fond of the color combinations. However, I would not have thrown a hissy fit about it.

I’m wondering if the HOs mentioned anything about brown in the packet or whatever that the designers get beforehand. Laurie mentioned that she hadn’t heard anything about it. If that is the case, then Jessie, SHUT UP. I hope she realized how unreasonable she was being. But I doubt it.

OTOH, when Laurie said that “we’ll show her that she likes brown”(I’m paraphrasing), I could not roll my eyes enough. Laurie, just because you’re obsessed with warm tones doesn’t mean the rest of the country is.

I’m not a big fan of purple, but I really liked the way Edward’s room turned out. The window treatments were my favorite part. I think Edward was a great addition to the show.

My only problem, as Lsura mentioned, was that file cabinet right under the computer. Why does practicality fly out the window when some designers have to deal with electronics of any kind? Hints for designers: Don’t put the TV in the far corner of the room. Surround sound speakers are placed there for a reason. Don’t put the TV in a cabinet unless it looks good with the cabinet doors open, because they’re going to be that way 95% of the time. And keep in mind that a person will have to sit at a computer eventually.

Does anyone know this episode title or location?? There are a lot of TS on today…

It’s on right now for me.

It’s Las Vegas: Smokemont Court.

It drives me crazy that the designers always do what the HO’s say they definitely don’t want. And why haven’t people learned that if they tell the producers, “We hate brown, we don’t want them to touch the ceiling fans or fireplace, the piano is a family heirloom so leave it alone” that this is exactly what the designers will do?

OK, I know it all makes for a more exciting show, but I think the HO’s are just stupid when they are surprised that what they asked to NOT happen, happens.

I think that’s one of the reasons I don’t watch this show anymore. That, and the annoying as all get-out music!!!

Taupe is a neutral color that picks up on other colors. The “brown room” was painted a very dark taupe that looked brown because of the brown, and black furnishings. Either way, the wall color was bad, but could’ve been made to look another color by using different colored furnishings.

As for taking pieces from other parts of the house, Decorating Cents on HGTV does that all the time. They even get stuff out of dumpsters, and turn it into other useless stuff.

I just saw it…

What a BITCH! Dem the rules lady!

I mean, she handled it SO badly! I didn’t like her at all, even before her reaction. I liked the other couple…
“Is it hot in here, or is it just you?”

BTW, I liked both rooms.

Laurie wanted to scavenge the sectional because she initially thouht the sofas were too large. At the end when she had to put them back in she played the Brave Little Toaster and said she liked them now and they fit in to the scale of the room much better than she thought. I kinda sorta thought she was giving herself a pep talk with the “she thinks she hates brown but she doesn’t” speech since she knew the HO would not be a big fan. Laurie said something right after about hating green but if I give you a room covered in green so I think she knew it was a desperate hope that the wall color would fly. If only she’d gone with one of the other stripes in the silk pillow fabric she’d used for her inspiration! I did like the wall unit although I thought there was going to be three rows of storage. Hated the outdoor carpet but I really liked the coffee table.

Best line of the ep: “Is she coming back?”

I think Screaming Jessie knew that her reaction was over the top and she’d come off completely ridiculous so she tried to redeem herself at the end with the fake wrestling. I did find myself forgiving her excesses a little but she was still over the top. Mostly because even without the fit she came off so phony throughout the show. And Jessie honey? When you kick off the show saying that it doesn’t matter what your friends want because you’re going to do what you want–even if you’re joking–you have no room to complain about anything.

Edward’s room I liked a lot! I love purple so I’m always happy to see it show up. I loved the fabric and while I wouldn’t have displayed guitars the HO loved it so it works. I thought the desk and the shelves were great and I didn’t notice the knee-bang factor for the filing cabinets. The “stained glass” thing I liked except thatsome of the lighter-sprayed pieces looked like they just weren’t sprayed enough. The lightness looked accidental. If the HO likes the stool then I’m good with it, but the green fabric didn’t look good. Re-cover it with some of the grey flannel from the chaise or if the HO doesn’t really like it buy a new chair with the leftover budget.

I don’t think she has much respect for the home owners. There’s a first season episode where she states flat out that when people don’t like something, they usually don’t know what it is that they don’t like about it. That may be true, but I don’t see how she’s in the position to make that call ex ante after only having seen a taped interview of the people. She definately seems to be a bit of a fashionista fascist.

On Changing Rooms, the British version of this show, the designers talk with the HO that they will be working with to get an idea of what they want to do for their neighbor. After all, the thing about having your neighbor do your house is to see how your friends interpret your taste. So the HO might tell the designer, “my friend really likes pale shades, but I think she could handle a bit more color”, or “we want to create a cozy, private space for them to get away from their kids” and the designers comes in with an idea based on what the friends have told them. Still may be really wacky, but it has some basis (however thin) in what the neighbor wanted to do for their friends. I assumed this was done on Trading Spaces as well, but the more I watch, the more it sounds like nobody talks to the designers until they show up–which is stupid and designed to give people rooms they will not like.

I just watched the show. The purple “window treatment” didn’t do a lot for me. I thought it looked tacky. But in general I liked the room.

The brown? I didn’t think it was at all bad. I’m not a big fan of brown, but I thought the room looked good. I don’t understand how that woman could have such a meltdown. (Maybe I could, if it were my room and they did it in pink.)

Sometimes when I watch the show I’ll think about owning my own home and having someone come in to change it – either Trading Spaces style, or While You Were Out. But I’m a guy. If there are four walls and an overhead, I’m content. As long as a room isn’t filled with too much stuff, I’m fine. (Of course I’m also single and no one ever comes over, so it doesn’t really matter what my place looks like.)

i liked both rooms. i’m not a purple fan, edward does excellent work. orange is not one of my favourite colours but i thought laurie’s room worked nicely together. the taupe took a bit of the edge off of the orange.

good solid rooms, stange homeowners.

sing along time:

bad, bad, jessie brown, baddest h.o. in the whole dang town…

Yikes! I watched Trading Places last night and it might’ve been a rerun, but Frank scared me. Ty was on a ladder and he dropped something that landed in the light fixture sitting on the floor. Frank was relatively calm, but he was barely controlling his anger. If I were Ty, I’d have gone out and bought another fixture too. You know things are bad if you make Frank angry. During the credits, they had Frank saying “Well we’re fucked now.”

Wow Jessie was a complete pile of crap. Her room was ugly and tacky prior to the makeover and she has the nerve to come of as smug? Her shrill voice, actions and attitude were horrible the entire episode, so I relished the reveal. Take that you dimwitted drama queen!!!

When I first saw her and her husband- I thought “Yeesh does she have pictures of him killing someone?”

The rooms:

Edward’s was very good- matching the funkier homeowners and the projected use of the room really well. Everytime Edward is on, he does a good job and does it quietly and smoothly. He also has a bit a a risk-taker edge to his designs. The faux stained glass was quite clever. At first, I was really shaky on the purple, but in context it worked.

Lorri changed her hair! Her room was pretty good- she didn’t go fabric crazy for once. The contrasting colors made for a striking look. I think she was going for the “rich” look with the brown hues. Also, Lorri clearly stated that she did not know the HO did not like brown. As the design is done ahead of time, not much you can do at that point. Besides, they got a nice room. I only wish they had used Kia or taken Dez out of retirement for that idiot HO.

As far as the Changing Rooms comment, I like that show as well, but the designs are still done ahead of time, so asking the HOs their opinion is mere window dressing on both shows. It is up to the designer how much adjusting they do.

Personally, I think CR’s is not as good. Seems like they often are too constained in their budget or time, and the rooms are a bit “Meh”. Except for the infamous “bordello” room. What a riot that was. Handy Andy does have a nice sense of humor though. He was a riot on the crossover show with TS.

ROFL! Yes, but to be fair he once had a mullet and they were more evenly matched.

Can someone provide a link?

Laurie’s room

Edward’s room

I thought they both looked great (too bad the angle they chose in the after image of Edward’s room above doesn’t show the desk, though). I also thought the wall unit in Laurie’s room would have more shelving in it. I didn’t much care for that piece the way it was built. My favorite part of Edward’s room was the lighting – very cool ceiling fixtures and I’ve always liked when floor plants are lit up – it makes the room really warm and inviting.

I also hated the homeowner and was glad she hated her room – served her right for being such a whiney hag.

I’d love to see more of Edward – he’s fast becoming my favorite designer, surpassing Vern. I not only love his rooms, but I love his personality and demeanor.

Great show. Can’t wait to see the “celebrity” TS with Andy Dick – that oughta be a hoot!

(OH! And for those who haven’t seen it, I think next Saturday’s rerun episode is Kia’s graveyard room!)
