Traditional 2D animated films, no more? Only 3D in the future?

Is that the case? Is this the end of an era? Does this means 3D is the only way animation will be rendered at Disney?

What about other animation houses?

BTW: I already know that even in 2D animation, computers have taken over already. However, does the success of Shrek and Finding Nemo, coupled with recent feeble performances of 2D movies, means that in the near future all animation is going to be 3D?

Well, we’ll probably see plenty of Japanese 2D animation for quite a while still.

And anime, at least, doesn’t have to worry about that whole “cartoons are only for kiddies!” baggage perpetually hanging over it’s head. (To mix a metaphor or two)

The assumption is that they may return to 2D animation if either of the last 2 2D films are a hit.

Is anyone at a non-Disney studio currently make a 2D animated film?

I will say that I saw Brother Bear this weekend, and there are some scenes where the colors and detail are so amazing that not only did I gasp audibly when they came on, but I heard many a gasp in the audience as well.

Leonard Maltin has it right when asked about the issue:

“There’s nothing wrong with animation that a good movie can’t cure.”

And that’s right. Disney lost money on some 2D films because they were mediocre films. 3D films are doing well because they’re good films. When another good 2D film comes back and makes a lot of money, then there will a flood of 2D films.

Another reason for asking is if I should concentrate on showing more 3D and not doing much 2D for the portfolio I am making.

Just trying to figure what is the future of animation work.

Ugh. I can’t stand 3D animation or anime. I predict a bleak and purposeless existence for myself in the years to come.
