Traditions of Christmas & Songs; OR, Who's Actually Eaten a Sugar Plum or Been...

…on a Sleigh Ride?

Many of our (English) Christmas carols and other holiday songs deal with foods or activities, many of which I’ve never actually eaten or done. For example,

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”

Nope, never had chestnuts roasted on an open fire. Never even seen a vendor selling them. Are they yummy? How much does a bag cost?

“…at the fireplace while we watch the chestnuts pop. Pop pop pop!”

Do chestnuts pop like popcorn kernels in extreme heat? The popped kernels must be HUGE.

“…as we pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie.”

I’ve had coffee, and I’ve had pumpkin pie, but not at the same sitting. Do the tastes complement each other? I’ve sworn off the Bean, so I guess I’ll never know. :frowning:

“Here we come a-wassailing.”

I’ve never had wassail. Here’s a recipe. Maybe I’ll whip some up later on. Here’s another one for lambswool.

“…while visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.”

Never had a sugarplum. ISTR reading somewhere that a sugarplum is an archetype of Victorian “candy,” which is to say, dried fruit coated in crystallized sugar. I can neither confirm nor deny this.

“Now bring us the figgy pudding.”

Never even seen it. Sounds disgusting.

“…lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.”

Last but not least, I’ve never been on a sleigh ride, even though we’re not wanting for snow in Central Illinois in the winter.

So, have any of you folks ever eaten (or drank) anything on this list? Ever been on a sleigh ride? Ever done or eaten anything else in a holiday song that I’ve missed here?

I await reports from the field :D.

I’ve never seen…

…mommy kissing Santa Claus

…anyone’s Grandma being run over by a reindeer

Chestnuts pop (well, explode), but the result is just lots of small messy pieces, nothing like popcorn; the idea is that piercing them before roasting (on a shovel in the embers) will stop them exploding, but one or two always go pop.
Roast chestnuts are rather nice, the texture and flavour is a little like potato, but sweeter and rather nutty.

Done the wassail thing too (complete with roasted crab apples bobbing in it) - I prefer mulled wine.

I’ve gone a-wassailing and drunk wassail. It’s very good actually.

But I’ve never decked the halls with boughs of holly. Though I’ve seen it done.

I only really celebrate one day of Christmas - and quite frankly, with the obvious exception of the golden rings, most of those gifts scare me - and might possibly violate the 13th amendment.

Sugar plums, according to the Vermont Country Store, are a plum compote with dark chocolate poured over it. They sound very rich. Haven’t had 'em.

I have had wassail—it’s pretty darn good.

Coffee is great with just about any kind of pie.

No sleigh rides in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of southern CA that I am aware of.

I think figgy pudding is supposed to be raisiny, like plum pudding. But I’m not sure.

I do deck my halls (OK, the mantlepiece and shelf top) with holly, but I guess that’s all I’ve ever done. Well, I’ve been caroling a lot, which is like wassailing, right? It does not help that I don’t drink alcohol or coffee, and live in sunny California.

Here’s a recipe for figgy pudding, which seems likely to taste like the kind I’ve had. Yes it’s nice.

SUGARPLUMS
“…while visions of sugarplums danced in their head”. Those famous sugarplums which fill children’s dreams at Christmas were originally sugar coated coriander, a treat that offered a sweet start and then a spicy burst of flavor. Later the recipe included small bits of fruit and became the confection we know today.
Hmmm. Who’d have thought it?

Roasted chestnuts are difficult to peel out of the shells without burning your fingers, but it’s worth it. Mangetout’s description is pretty good too. Firm, nutty, sweet potato flavour. I like to dip them in a little salt in the palm of my hand. The shells do crack open noisily when they’re done, and I recommend not looking directly at them to check - specks of shell in your eye surely do sting ;).

Never been on a sleigh ride, though. Closest would be a horse and trap ride in the snow.

Well, I used to go caroling every year (especially fun as I’m a Jewish agnostic, but my old friends and I love to sing harmony, so what the heck.) I plan to resurrect the tradition again this year, complete with wassail and figgy pudding…I was in England this spring, and bought a book of 1,000 English desserts (including about 200 different steamed puddings and multiple figgy pudding recipes). I’m looking forward to trying them out, but does anyone know where I can find a pudding mold with a lid? I looked in about a billion housewares shops in England (Canterbury and Dover), but the salespeople all looked at me like I was nuts when I asked. Why the hell do they sell books with recipes calling for an item that apparently nobody manufactures, sells, or owns?

Whenever we go caroling and someone requests “Joy to the World,” we do the Three Dog Night version.

Never been on a sleigh ride, but roasted chestnuts are yummy. And anyone who nips my nose had damn well better be someone I’m dating.

Steam pudding basins are usual covered with a lid made of foil or greaseproof paper/baking parchment. You make a pleat in them to allow for steam build up, and tie string around them, not forgetting to make a handle so you can lift it out safely.

I’ve done the holly stuff, but apart from that nothing.

I have “rested” with Merry Gentlemen, on occasion.

One at a time, I hasten to add.

I’ve been on a couple of real bonafide sleigh rides, complete with fully decked out Clydesdales, when I was a kid growing up in the prairies.

Never done any of that other stuff, although there are street vendors here who sell roasted chestnuts around Christmas time - I’ve never eaten them, but they smell very good. Maybe this year I’ll try them.

I make Plum Pudding (aka Christmas pudding, I think) every year about this time so it has time to age a bit and be ready for Christmas and New years. It sounds sort of like the the pudding described in 'A Christmas Carol". The recipe I use has 1 cup of beef suet and raisins, nuts and citrus peel. Its a family tradition and a pain to make. My mom and my older brother always ask me to make one for them since I’m doing it anyway so they can have one too. Does this count in answering the OP?

Christmas Pudding isn’t the same as Figgy Pudding, but is similar. I reckon Johnny L.A. could have done with your advice in his “how to make it” thread, Davy.

I have had roasted chestnuts–street vendors sell them at Dickens on the Strand in Galveston. Yummy!!

And I’ve had wassail, and I’ve gone caroling, and I’ve decked the halls with boughs of (fake) holly . . .

And curses to you, rastahomie, for starting this thread. As soon as I read the title, I had an irresistible urge to put in a Christmas CD. My office-mate offered me $1,000,000 not to play it yet, but since she couldn’t fork it over, Harry Connick Jr. is crooning away!

How come nobody seems to have mentioned mistletoe? How could I forget that one? It’s one of my fondest high school memories…it sure made my season bright!

Then there was the time a friend made up Christmas cards that read, “Tinsel bondage: Gift wrap your loved ones for this holiday season!”

What about gay apparel? What is gay apparel? For men-feather boas and mesh tee-shirts? Flannels and combat boots for the ladies?

Oh yes, candles on the tannenbaum, shining brightly seems like a fire hazard - a 911 call waiting to happen.

Also, never been kissed underneath the mistletoe (on the other hand, I’m not anyone’s mommy - perhaps I have to wait for that first. So I can be seen doing it.)

I have decked the halls. I have gone caroling. I have gone a-wassailing. I’ve never gone on a sleigh ride, but I once rode a fire engine around a parking lot with Santa Claus driving. I have hung my stocking by the chimney with care. I have gone over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house.

And I was born on Christmas (yes, really!).

Ok, a minor pick here: It’s “God rest ye merry, gentlemen”. The comma make the difference.

Haven’t done most of those things. I have been on sleigh rides but usually on New Years Eve not around Christmas.

I wanna try roasted chestnuts… I wonder if I could find any here…

I bought a bag of raw chestnuts at Wal-Mart:) last night and roasted them (in my oven, since an open fire in my neighborhood will likely get a visit from the FD).

In a word: delicious!

I can’t wait to try some roasted on an open fire; perhaps the faster roasting time, and the smoke, impart a more complex flavor.

If you want to make roasted chestnuts at home, here’s what ya do:

Preheat your oven to 400F.

Cut an X on the flat side of each chestnut with a pointy knife.

Cook for 15-20 minutes. For something a little different, pull the chesnuts out of the oven after about 12-14 minutes and put a little smidgen of butter on the opening of each one, and then put them back in for the remaining few minutes. Mmmmmmmmm…

Roasted chestnuts are not only yummy all by themselves, but make a great addition to stuffing!!
Coffee and pumpkin pie are a classic combo (and if you’re lucky enough to have a Gloria Jean’s near you, you can get Pumpkin Pie Coffee around the holidays. Sounds nasty, tastes great)
I usually leave the 'gay apparell" stuff to my lesbian sisters.
Never been on a sleigh ride, but have been sledding. Might that count? Probably not.
Have walked in a “winter wonderland”, have built snowmen, but never pretended they were parsons or circus clowns.
