Trailer for Mel Gibson's new movie, "Apocalypto"

So it’s not supposed to be a directly religious film, but it sounds to me like contemporary American religio/cultural issues are probably being worked through in the film. Many conservative-y Christians, anyway, see themselves as being witness to the collapse of Christian civilization, nearing the end of the world.

What, you don’t think a Russian Jew can play an authentic Roman slave? And I bet you think John Wayne wasn’t born for the role of Genghis Khan! I tell you, some people have no appreciation for good casting.

Given how fast Mayan civilization collapsed…

Granted, not as fast as the Aztec.

Not so fast . . . Maya civilization goes back at least to the 4th Century BC, possibly longer. The Classic Period was 200-850 AD. But Maya cities in the northern Yucatan continued to flourish until 1450 AD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya#Decline_of_the_Maya

Well, based on the accents used in popular movies:

Austrailian = Spanish-Roman (Gladiator)
British = Ancient Greek / Ancient Trojan (Troy)
Irish = Macedonean (Alexander the Great)
Count Choculan = Epirote (Alexander the Great (his mom) )

From your own link, it describes that Mayan civilization crashed in less than two centuries, and left very few large settlements in its main area. Just because there was something left doesn’t mean it didn’t come down quickly, widely, and irrevocably. In many of those areas, no major civiliation returned until the Spanish conquest.

I just had to tell you that my husband and I had a great laugh over that. Thanks!

About Mel’s movie, I’m greatly looking forward to it! If nothing else, it just LOOKS fascinating.
