With tomorrow’s paycheck, I’m planning to offer a comfortable retirement to my still-beautiful, but aging and increasingly arthritic, Palm Vx. Her replacement will be a Palm Zire, so I’m staying within the same OS - just a later version. Any “Issues” that I need to know about before installing the new one?
I’ve done it a couple of times. No problems, except once I had a hack program on my old one that turned out to crash the newer model – until I deleted it.
My only advice is to back up your data before you do anything. It’s usually under C:\Program_Files\Palm<username> or something like that, make sure you get all the subdirectories too. If worst comes to worst, you can copy the backup back to the original directory and start over.
I’ll assume you got a Zire71? (Slick little bugger…I love mine!) If so, head here and run through their “Upgrading?” instructional wizard. For me, the process was flawless and painless.
Do pay attention to the concept of not dumping in all your existing old programs. I had one cause problems - in a month of use, the only crash I’ve had was from trying to use one of the old programs. Solution at least is easy - just delete the trouble-makers.
Thanks everyone - and yes, I’m getting the 71. Should arrive in about a week or ten days, courtesy buy.com. [happy happy happy]
Don’t forget to check out the trade-in offer at palm.com - your Vx should be worth something like $50. Not sure if you have to buy it directly from Palm or not.
I thought about that, but I decided against it because (a) I think rebates are a scam and pay no attention to them, and (b) it still works well enough that it might make a good backup if something happens to the new one.
