I started using an e-cig back in January 2013, the same day I quit cigarettes. And yay, I’m finally ready to get rid of this thing. I’d like to try nicotine gum. I’m wondering where to find it the cheapest? Is it Amazon (it’s Amazon, right?). I’m probably going to go through a lot at first. I’m wondering, does brand matter? Does it taste weird?
I’m interested in anecdotes from anyone who’s used nicotine gum to quit smoking, even if it didn’t stick forever for you/your mom/your dog’s uncle. I’ve heard the patch can give you crazy dreams. Does the same apply here?
I’m a baby-stepper. I’ve tried to quit before. I succeeded for awhile, but ultimately failed because I tried to change my entire identity from smoker to nonsmoker overnight. I think I’ll do better if I break the psychological addiction to the habit of smoking separately from my physical addiction to nicotine. And I have cut down on the nicotine as much as I could–went from 36mg to 18mg strength over the course of several months.
Cheapest that I’ve found is Walmart’s “Equate” brand - either 2mg or 4mg, 100 pieces for $25.98. The “Nicorette” brand is $38.98 for the same quantity.
There is a difference in taste between the two, but fortunately, I prefer the taste of the cheaper gum.
I’ve been using the gum for quite a while now, and I have no problems with weird dreams. I’ve used the patch before, too, and no problems with those, either.
You can buy 12mg strength, which I am using. You can also buy zero nicotine and mix it so that you can get any strength you want with a little math. Not that I am advocating one way or the other but you definitely havent cut down as much as you could on e-cigs.
Also my current setup has a “puff counter” so I can have a handle on how much I use it per day. Want to make sure I don’t become one of those people who is puffing way more than I ever did on cigarettes.
When I said as much as I could, I meant within *my *limits, not the lowest possible dilution. Another reason I’d like to use gum instead of an e-cig (which you touched on) is that it’s easier to count blister packets of gum than a liquid.
Also, I’m guessing you can use gum anywhere, and that’d be another reason to switch to the gum. (As opposed to ecigs, which, I think you mentioned, are being banned indoors in some places.)
