Translation into Japanese requested

A while back I posted a thread with a question about translating a phrase into Russian. Now I’d like to get a translation into Japanese, specifically, “Russian - Japanese War, 1905” adding date if necessary to complete the sense in Japanese). Any information, please?

1905

日露戦争1905年

pronunciation: nichi ro sensou, where nichi stands for nippon (Japan) and ro for roshia (Russia), and sensou means war.

As an alternative to 1905年, you can write 明治三十八年 or 明治38年 meiji san-juu-hachi nen (year 38 of the Meiji era).

  • Arigato. *

The date is unnecessary and unnatural. There was only one war between Russia and Japan. The conflicts in the 1930s and the declaration of war in 1945 were between the Soviet Union and Japan.

Yeah, the Japanese Wikipedia article for the war is just 日露戦争.

Thanks… Now could you please render “arigato” in the proper character (s)?

ありがとう (arigatou)

Technically you can use 有難う or 有り難う, but IME nobody ever actually does.

You’re assuming the year is included as a way of uniquely identifying the war, which is, as you say, unnecessary. But there’s nothing strange about specifying the year, for example in the caption of a photo or film footage. It would be equivalent to writing “Korean War, 1952” instead of just writing “Korean War”.

Yes, because the OP said

.My emphasis.

If the OP has specified he or she wanted the date included, I would have assumed it was necessary. As the OP said “if necessary” than I assume it’s not.

My original point stands with the assumption.

Looking at it again, I donno. This is always a problem with translation is that context is all important. Unfortunately most people don’t realize that so they don’t provide it.

I agree with TokyoBayer. The OP asked how to refer to this specific war in Japanese. The answer is 日露戦争、without any year specified.

By the way, I generally find that finding an entry in Wikipedia and looking at alternate languages is a good way to find the most appropriate translation.
