Transmission Shops Suck in Maryland

I need a part for my trans. It is a selective washer. A part that is needed to set the proper end play for various assemblies in the trans. None of the trans warehouses stock the parts, none of the dealers have them, so I call some trans repair shops, after all if they fix them, they must have them - WRONG, AAMCO and Cottmen both told me they do not use those parts!!!

WTF!!! They would charge my over a thousand dollars to do the rebuild and would not even check the end play to choose the proper selective washer. One mechanic at the dealer told me they just put the same selective washer back in.

They all need a big boot up the ass.

Thank you and good night.

Can you get one from a junked vehicle? Lots o’ accidents down there on the Capital Beltway

B&I: All mechanics suck… unless you live next door to one. I mean it. Specially specialty stores. You know the drill and you know the tricks.

NBIT:
You ain’t kidding about that. The Beltway is like bumper cars at the amusement park! The trans is for a race car so I need something a bit different than what I would find in the bone yard

E-Sabbath:
Yeah, I know. That is why I’m doing this one myself. If ya want something done right…

Aw, darn. Well… You never know unless you look. Tried a speciality parts supplier? Hell, know any other racers with the same issue? Mebbe they know someone.

My yearly laughing at others misfortunes comes every winter in DC when there’s half an inch on the road and a 90-300 car pileup. Happens every year.

Hey, tried E-Bay? What do you need, anyhow? Maybe it’s part of a subassembly… it’s a custom tranny or?

It is a selective thrust washer. There are nine different sizes for this part, I happen to need a #6 (brown), it sets the rear end play in the GM automatic overdrive transmission.

When the output section is done. A dial indicator gets setup on the top of the output shaft, the end play of that assembly on the THM200-4R should be .004 to .010, mine is .0245. It sounds like the usual trans shops in the area would have not checked the end play of any of the assemblies and just put in new friction plates and band with the same selective washers.

It is such a specific part that I doubt e-bay can help. I did talk to another racer that is the owner of a hi-performance trans shop in NY and he said he has them.

It the one on Central Ave down by… mmm. Yonkersish? I was thinking maybe you could find something that’d have that washer in it, and buy that off E-Bay.
