Travel destinations of the future?

Name a place outside the U.S. that is currently off travelers’ radar (relatively speaking) and that you think is likely to become very popular in the next 10 to 20 years, such that people will say, “I wish I’d gone there back in the early 2020s!”

The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. Beautiful beaches, sea turtles, great surfing. Lodging and food is extremely affordable and the local culture hasn’t yet been too corrupted by Big Tourism.

Never been there, but I have heard Nicaragua has everything Costa Rica has, but is cheaper and not as “touristy”.

I visited the island of Dominica many years ago, on the first cruise ship to stop at the small island. I’ve never been back, but wow was it a cool place.

Iceland, while they still have ice. But not like the ice of the early 2020’s.

Alaska as well, while people do go there it’s still kind of out of the way for most people. People are going to want to see the a lot of natural wonders before they are gone. Future generations are going to be pissed at us when they see pictures and video’s of how it was. Where did the polar bears go mommy?

Underwater exploration of former islands in Vanuatu and the Maldives.

For the rich Low-Earth Orbit, for the very rich the Moon.

This sounds like a great recommendation! The flights look a little on the expensive side to Managua or Liberia (in Costa Rica), but otherwise I’ll bet it would be an amazing place to spend winter break!

One travel destination I think will be more popular in the future is Albania. It’s got a great coastline, gorgeous mountain ranges, and a distinctive culture. The tourist infrastructure has come a long way since the early 1990s (when I first visited), yet it is still great value for money.

Elmer, thanks for the recommendation! We’ve bought our tickets and will be spending two weeks there in January. (Hopefully we won’t corrupt the place!)

Hope you have fun. I haven’t been myself; just heard glowing reviews on my last two trips to Tamarindo. My dream is to get enough guys together to rent a comfortable boat and cruise the coast in search of waves.

If global warming continues to spiral out of control the Antarctica may be the tropical beachfront destination of the future.

On a more serious (I hope) and pleasant note, I think virtual reality (VR) headset tours will become the preferred trip destinations of the future. It won’t be long before VR headsets are less clunky, more affordable and have ultra-realistic maps of prime destinations around the world. Someday they may even have realistic smell-o-vision and tactile-o-vision incorporated to make the experience almost indistinguishable from the real deal.

Take a trip to Virtual Paris. Tour the Virtual Louvre, with a virtual AI tour guide to assist and educate you on request. Meet a virtual friend (either fabricated, or a real friend with their own VR headset) at a fine Paris cafe. Have an order-in French meal at the ready so you can actually eat and drink what you see on screen.

Ok, time to visit London. No need to fly or chunnel, it just takes a minute to load the London map and bingo, you are there!

Let’s visit Mars. No, you don’t need a space suit. It’s not chilly and airless on Virtual Mars. In fact, bring your virtual girlfriend, your virtual dog and a real six pack.

Let’s go to Hell…
