Traveling in North America

I’ve been wondering about this thread too. Having recently driven from Calgary to Regina to Saskatoon and back to Calgary, I can offer some idea of driving times, if Fish Cheer is considering bus or car travel:

Calgary to Regina: 8 hours
Regina to Saskatoon: 3 hours
Saskatoon to Calgary: 7 hours

Note that all times include fuel stops, pee breaks, and suchlike.

You mentioned being on campus. Where I went to school, the students had put up a shared ride board. People offering or looking for rides posted where they were going and when. The rider usually picked up part of the cost of gas. That was a great way to find a ride, and I met some interesting people. Check and see what the school you will be at offers. Who knows where you might find a ride to.

Just to touch on this one minor point: Air Canada has daily nonstop flights from Frankfurt to both Toronto and Calgary, as well as from Munich to Toronto; Lufthansa also flies daily from Frankfurt to Toronto.

On buses…

As mentioned several times above, do not take the bus to get to Saskatoon. I rode from Saskatoon to Winnipeg on Greyhound once, and it was godawful.

Once you are settled into S’toon, however, the city bus system is quite good. Not to European standards, of course, but pretty efficient compared to most places I’ve lived in North America. Especially if you live near campus. I recommend getting a bus pass. You can easily take the bus across the river to downtown (and you may be thinking that you can just as easily walk across, but when it’s 30 below that wind cuts through you pretty badly, and you’ll be happy to jump on the bus!). I can’t remember the best place to get groceries around there, but I’m sure many students can fill you in.

Oh, and Rodd Hill posted a link to Wanuskewin. It’s cool. You should go.

Sigh. I meant Fish Cheer, of course.

:smack:

Sunspace you are underestimating the cost of the cab ride from the airport to downtown Toronto. My experience has been that you are looking at a range that is more like $45 to $60 depending on the time of day, where you are going in the downtown, and how much you are prepared to tip.

Fish Cheer if you do make it to Saskatoon for your internship, as others have said, I think you’ll find the distance from the campus to the downtown area very walkable. It is also very pleasant to walk along the paths by the river. The train bridge that crosses the river can be fun to walk across. You can stop and watch the pelicans fishing by the weir as you go across. If you enjoy museums, the Mendel art gallery on the downtown “side” of the river can be quite enjoyable, along with its attached conservatory.
