Traveling Wilburys: Video question.

Does anyone know what old train line was featured on the Wilburys video “End of the Line”?

It’s the classic steam locomotive known as “a studio set”.

Here is the video in question.

GuanoLad is correct; there is simply not enough room on a railroad car – even a baggage car – to comfortably film anything. Besides, the landscape passing by the windows looks like a process shot to me. My vote would be “on a set.”

However, the landscape looks like California, specifically the north end of the Central Valley, so assuming they used stock footage of a real railroad and not just something shot out the window of a moving auto, I’d guess they are of the Sierra Railroad up in Gold Country, site of countless movies and TV shows.

Thanks for the insight. The song has always meant a lot to me, and I enjoy the video too. It’s disappointing to think the vid is a product of a stage/film lab.

George had previous experience playing on a train as you can see in this clip.

There is a brief shot of a locomotive in the clip, but I am no expert on trains so couldn’t name it. It’s likely stock footage and could be from anywhere in the world.

Got it. Don’t rub it in.

Always ready and willing to spread disillusion and ruin the magic of Hollywood, that’s me.

You just ruined my life, but no prob… However, what are your qualifications to be in the position as destroyer of dreams? It appears you are in the business. Just curious.

Only as a hobbyist. I dabble a bit in visual effects for short films, and made my own film with a lot of CGI backgrounds in it. There are a few other Dopers here who are professionals though.

I couldn’t ID it either. It’s too quick and from a weird angle plus the lack of the ability to stop and step-frame on YouTube defeated me.

I can’t help with the locomotive ID, but I can tell you that you can use the comma and period keys to step-frame a paused YouTube video. (This assumes you’re on a computer, of course.)

Eureka! Thank you VERY much!
