Travelling ideas: PLACE is really good for EVENT / OCCASION

Travellers! I welcome your ideas / suggestions / recommendations for good places to go for specific events and occasions.

I happened to be in Vienna for New Year’s Eve. They turn the entire city centre into one big party zone, with about 14 different stages in different places hosting everything from live classical concerts to pop music. Great atmosphere, friendly, lots of people but not too many, no louts or drunks or similar problems (like you’d get in my native London). Lots to see and do, plenty of food and drink. So Vienna is a really good place to go for **New Year’s Eve.

Anyone got anything else to offer?

Philly is a great place to be for the 4th of July – and the week or two leading up to it.

Calgary is a great place to spend the summer. Warm to hot days, cool evenings and nights, almost no bugs, low humidity, the occasional wild storm, and the mountains an hour away. What more could you ask for? (Well, lakes that are warm enough to swim in, but that’s about it.)

Calgary is also known for it’s huge rodeo and exhibition, the Calgary Stampede in July. I guess it’s great for that, if you like the western stuff.

The best time I ever had in Paris was on Bastille Day. In the morning I watched the parade on the Champs-Élyssées. Then at night I saw the most incredible fireworks display, coming out of the Eiffel Tower. I grabbed a spot on the other side of the river (by Place de la Republique) five hours ahead of time. From that spot I photographed the fireworks, plus their reflection in the river, and the Alexander III Bridge.
