The only breed of dog I know of that regularly climbs trees are beagles and to a lesser degree the occassional scent hounds that are related to beagles. I have seen beagles climb high up in big trees and somehow make it back down alive comming down head first. This is just a personnal observation on my part.
Are there any other breeds of dogs that are known for tree climbing?
I used to breed beagles and field trial them with the AKC. At one time, I had a kennel with 45 adult beagles in it that I regularly hunted with. I have seen beagles climb trees before but only those that may have been partially blown down to say a 45 degree angle. I have never seen a beagle climb a tree that was standing upright in it’s natural position.
There are quite a few tree climbing beagles on You tube as well as other tree climbing dogs. There doesn’t seem to be any particular breed noted for tree climbing ability besides the catalua. I presently have a field bred beagle but have never seen him climb. There are more you tube videos of beagles climbing than any other single breed I can find though.
In my everyday life the only tree climbing dogs I have ever seen were beagles and I have seen several of them.
Catahoula Leopard Dog (Cur). It’s kinda their thing.
My favorite is the Norwegian Lundehund, even if I never met one. I don’t know if they climb trees, but I wouldn’t be surprised given their fame in climbing cliffsides.
I have a dog - a German Shepherd, Leet the Wonder Dog[sup]TM[/sup], who would dearly love to climb trees and get the naughty squirrels who run up and get away and then sit there and call him a lot of perfectly applicable names in squirrel language. But he never gets further than looking at me appealingly to see if I will lift him up high enough to reach.
The (cur) is commonly crossed with other hounds including beagles down south. I wonder how many of these crosses find their way secretly into registred breeding stocks. I know from experience that breeders will make experimental crosses from time to time in their lines and cover it up.
I know of a couple Aussies who climb trees. And one which walks along the tops of pipe fence. I doubt it’s a breed thing, more of a drive to do so plus the athleticism to make it possible. Beagles are really persistent, that would probably help.
We were fostering dogs for awhile. One set we had were a brother and sister pair of Catahoulas. I had never even heard of them before. They were strikingly beautiful. And the female followed me around like a… well lost puppy. We came very close to keeping her. They were very calm. But we would usually get them sick and nurse them back. Then I looked into the breed. Not a good fit. There are videos like this of one going 15 ft up a tree to get a stick. Or this. They are working dogs who really do need a full time job. If you aren’t ruining them all day say goodbye to your belongings. But their appearance really is striking.
I have a border collie mix, and he will go up a tree, although he doesn’t do it like a cat would. The crotch has to be fairly low. (I’ll bet he could do more with training.) He also will walk out on branches hanging over the water. He loves that. He thinks it’s like the dog walk in agility.
He was also the first animal to realize there was a place to sit on the back of the couch. This was pretty amazing as we had two cats and it had never occurred to them. For awhile it became a game of whoever got there first, but he’s too big now, so the cat gets the spot.
