—Apos, do you follow politics in America? He knew how the remark would be interpreted coming from him, and he chose his words with that interpretation in mind. Everyone knew what he meant.—
Let me put it more bluntly, since this is the BBQpit: you’d have to be a real dumbass to think that “unless lightining strikes, Hillary will soon be in the Senate” is the same thing as saying “I sure hope lightining strikes and kills Hillary.” I have no love for Lott, but just because one doesn’t like him doesn’t make ANY potential “gotcha” game equally legitimate.
Thanks for stating the obvious. Trent Lott is the perfect politition. He couldn’t lead a horse with a rope. His sole purpose is to wear a suit. stand in front of a camera, and sound stupid. The real tragedy here is this worthless jerk has a fair amount of control over our every day lives. He is just about the best example of one term term limits there is.
I hope you didn’t think I’m a Dem just because Trent Lott can’t grasp high school physics. Everything you mentioned is obscene, no matter the political affiliation.
Hell Freezes Over, Pigs Fly, and DDG Agrees With December…
Saying, “If this country had elected Strom Thurmond president back in 1948, we wouldn’t have had all the problems we’ve had over the years” is completely idiotic. He really thinks that if Strom had been president from 1948 to 1952, that that would have changed something, somehow? That we wouldn’t have had the Fifties and the Sixties and the Seventies and the Eighties and the Nineties, with each decade’s unique turmoils and tribulations? Geez.
It’s like that sci-fi story where the guy steps on a single butterfly during his trip back to the age of dinosaurs, and when he comes back to the present, it’s a totalitarian dictatorship. Thing is, that’s fiction.
The whole reason the Dixiecrats dropped out of the national Democratic party and nominated Strom was because of HHH’s strong civil rights plank in the Dems’ platform.
So Trent thinks that electing one by-god racist president back in 1948 would have, what, kept all that nasty civil rights stuff from happening, and we’d still have blacks who knew their place? Egad.
Or, no, wait, I know, he’s talking about the problems with the International Space Station, right? Yes, that’s it. See, if the Commie-hating Strom had been elected in 1948, he’d have used the Bomb to send Russia back to the Stone Age on January 21, 1949, and then we wouldn’t have had a Space Race, or a Space Program, so we wouldn’t have to be worrying about funding for the ISS, or having to rationalize what it’s for, or dealing with the Russkies, you can’t tell me they’ve reformed, or worse, dealing with the heathen Chinese, where were they when we were sending men into orbit, huh, or worst of all talking to those eggheads down at NASA, is that all they can talk about, is manned-mission-to-Mars, manned-mission-to-Mars yadda yadda yadda…?
Yep, those are some mighty big problems all right, and if only Strom Thurmond had been leading this country, we could have bypassed all of them.
Plus he’d have known exactly how to deal with Joe McCarthy–give the man a bigass special office (hey, we could call it something like “Homeland Security”) and as many troops from the FBI and the Army as he required to Get The Job Done, get them damn commie pinko fags out of there…
[leaving thread with a small shudder for what might have been, and a renewed respect for the haberdasher from Kansas]
Amen. Trent Lott is affable – and that’s the end of his list of virtues. It’s sad that affability alone has made him one of the mosts powerful people in the world.
[sup]Maybe that’s a good lesson for some of the brilliant, but surly people who post here.[/sup]
