Laura must be thrilled.
At least Trent Lott cut the house loose so it could flee. (Hopefully the typo won’t be corrected so the first sentence will make sense.)
Kennedy, Clinton, Mondale, stop me when I get to a rich white guy. What the fuck is your obsession with race?
What, you haven’t noticed that politicians tend to be both rich and white?
There is so little I can add to this. That won’t stop me. The Trent Lott’s beach house comment was so stunningly inappropriate as to be incomprehensible. It is one thing to have difficulty with your native tongue, to have difficulty in clearly and concisely expressing a complected policy or rational for policy, but to stand in the middle of a catastrophe, with millions of people displaced, thousands teetering on the brink, whole cities wiped from the face of the earth, the corpses of the dead bobbing in the back waters, surrounded by palpable despair, and gush about fucking Trent Lott’s new beach house is so callus, insensitive, and uncomprehending as to leave a person undecided as whether to cry, scream or laugh.
When I heard this on the news last night my first reaction was that it could not be true. The President could not have said that. Apparently he did say it, and more than that thought it was an especially cleaver thing to say. This is just beyond comprehension. I am only reassured that the President did not take the opportunity to urge the outright repeal of the Federal Estate and Gift Tax (as opposed to just exempting the first three million dollars after marital deduction, debts and costs and expenses of administration).
In a lot of ways it is as if he had gone to the World Trade Center and wrung his hands over whoever the current equivalent of John D. Rockefeller is. I just don’t want to believe it. I fear, however, that it says volumes about the policy and concerns of this administration.
Do you suppose he’d be any smarter or any less enthralled by money and power is he got an occasional blow job?
If Strom Thurmond had been President, we wouldn’t have all these problems…
…because Strom is currently deceased and therefore can’t spout moronic bullshit?
No, because you’d have other, far more serious problems.
Why do you think she’s always smiling?
GWB is a very divisive president, indeed!
HOW DARE YOU NOTICE THE FACT THAT THERE ARE STILL VERY REAL RACIAL INEQUALITIES IN THIS COUNTRY? TRYING TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM OF RACISM MEANS YOU’RE A RACIST!!
Man, if there’s anything we can count on in this world, it’s that duffer will always show up to illustrate just how moronic and morally bankrupt the viewpoints he holds really are. If I had a dollar every time some mouth-breather on the SDMB claimed that it’s racist not to pretend that racial issues don’t exist, I could rebuild Trent Lott’s beach house myself.
Xanax?
No, Excalibre. The thing we can count on is Bush being blamed for anything bad that ever happens. Anywhere. Forever.
When we all know it was Clinton.
What about blaming him for the things that he has done, like say, oh, I dunno, making an insensitive comment about a rich politician’s fucking vacation home while millions have lost everything they have?
:dubious:
Actually, all this particular thread illustrates is that we can count on Bush being blamed when Bush himself says something tasteless, clueless, or stupid.
I mean, I cut Bush a lot of slack on his language issues (“rubbles”, “internets”, “misunderestimate”, etc.) because it’s just the way he is. His dad talked a lot like that too, it’s not something I regard as a big deal.
But I do hold the man responsible for the content of what he says. And using Trent Lott as an example of someone to be sorry for, in a catastrophe that is devastating the lives and destroying the financial assets of thousands of ordinary/poor people, is just ludicrously ham-handed. It’s like Ken Lay’s wife trying to inspire sympathy by saying that they had only one multimillion-dollar mansion left, or something.
Yes, I’m sure Bush didn’t mean to give the impression of being elitist or sympathizing more with rich cronies than with ordinary people. And it’s unlikely, IMHO, that he’s personally more worried about Trent Lott’s beach house than about the sufferings of thousands of non-rich strangers. However, that’s exactly the impression his stupid remark gave.
If you don’t like it when a President’s stupid remarks get criticized, you should write the President urging him to replace his speechwriter, not bitch about Bush-bashers.
Being black in America. What the fuck is up with your bewilderment?
Shhh!! **duffer ** thinks everybody here is white!!!
That’s just ridiculous. Everyone knows we Puerto Ricans run the joint.
Man, you’ve been on a roll of late.
It must be just awful to be a supporter of the President, to like him and his policies, even, and then spend every minute in anxious anticipation and dread of the man’s next foot-in-the-mouth outbreak of malpropia or flat idiocy.
The lousy thing is that there is a fair chance that he was just being honest. He really is concerned for poor Trent Lott’s plight, his beach house being blown away and washed away and all. He really does think that the millions, billions, of dollars of destruction, the deaths, a whole cities evacuated, thousands of people wandering in the wilderness, the potential for epidemic, the stunning economic and social impact of this thing, can be capsulized in the destruction of one well-placed fat cat’s summer cottage. You can almost see him thinking, “Poor old Trent. He’s lost his beach house. I need to say something to buck him up. Poor Trent.” He is just not acute enough to realize that in the middle of this catastrophe reasonable people might not think that Senator Lott’s vacation home was a priority item. I’m sure if the Vice-president, or the Secretary of Defense or Mr. Rove had been there to coach him he would have said something more palatable, rational and constructive.
No, the President isn’t evil. The President is merely ignorant and simple minded. It is the people who surround him and whisper instructions in his ear that are evil. Stating with the Vice-president.
