I used to have it. Now I don’t.

Any doper wanna hook me up with the .ttf file for the Tribune font?

Type-aholic here. Can you show me a sample of this typeface? I may know it by a different name and/or have a clone font.

Audrey,

It is the font used for the title of the Chicago Tribune and a few other newspapers around the country.

There is a sample in the upper left corner of this page.

Another sample can be found here.

I can remember having that font on several previous computers, but don’t seem to have it on this one. I did find a pretty good likeness called “textur”, but I remember there being a font called “tribune” that was pretty common.

Please help.

Lance, isn’t it instantly recognizable? Love the typeface; don’t have it.

Lance: That Germanic blackletter style typeface you love – and copycat variations of it – have been around forever, under many different names:

“Old English” is a pretty common one; also “Fraktur.” I’ve also seen variations as “Wedding Text” and “Cloister.”

See this link for Adobe’s blackletter fonts:

Thanks for the link Stuyguy, but I wasn’t looking for something similar to that font. I am looking for that exact font.

I guess I’ll have to settle for close enough.

Thanks all.

There are free font archives all over the 'Net. Have you tried those? I’ll take a looksee for you and see if I can find anything.

Lance, like I said, there are many, many variations of the typeface you seek, so you may find an exact match yet. I’ll keep an eye out; and, of course, Audrey has yet to weigh in.

But then again… you may NEVER find a match. Here’s why… a company will often commission an exclusive, copyrightable/trademarkable typeface – known as a logotype – to name and identify a product. Witness the instantly recognizable CocaCola swishy type. Sometimes they’ll want an entire alphabet, sometimes only the product name. Often a logotype will look a lot like a commerial typeface – but not exactly; there will be subtle differences in the letterforms.

If the Chicago Tribune had their logotype custom-made, you’ll probably have to settle for one of the lookalikes.

Whoops. Audrey slipped in the back door while I was typing my last post. Hi, Audrey!

Upon closer examination the font used by the Chicago Tribune differs slightly from the one used by the Asheville Tribune and the Jacksonville Tribune. I had previously thought that they were identical. Also the International Herald Tribune uses a similar but distinct font as well.

The Asheville Tribune (my current home town crappy paper) uses a font identical to one I have called Old English. Good call stuyguy. This will be good enough for my purposes.

Thanks for the help all.

Hehehehe! Hi stuyguy!!

Lance, guess what I found?

Aw hell. You got that one.

::smacks head and mumbles something about being senile::

Anyway, Lance, I checked my stockpile of fonts, and I’ve got some freeware Old English/blackletter fonts I can e-mail you, if you’re still interested. I can prep a sample sheet for you if you’d like to compare them for yourself.

First, though, I must get my brain on straight. Be back in a bit.

Oh. I thought you meant the typeface they use in the BODY. Instantly recognizable.

I’m looking for a font that might be described as “prison” or “institutional”. The closest I’ve found is a stencil font that wasn’t quite right. There are zillions of fonts in the archives, but unless you know the name you’ll never find it. Anyone?

Lumpy: Institutional look, eh? There’s one I like that looks like smudgy typewriter type. Try Holstein; it’s free from www.fonthead.com.
