Tricky computer question . . .

Hi. I’m trying to figure out a way to connect my old laptop hard drive to my desktop PC. I don’t actually have the laptop computer, anymore, I only have the hard drive. I’d like to copy the data from my laptop hd to the desktop hd, rather than buy a new laptop.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Best,

tgd

I do believe it’s the same operation as with any normal hard drive. Set the new/laptop one to slave, hook it up with the ribbon, plug it in, and voila, it should appear as another hard drive as you boot up.

You need a dealybob. It’s a 2.5" to 3.5" (or 3.5" to 2.5", depending on how you look at it) IDE adapter. You plug the hard drive into it, and then plug it into the IDE and power cables in your desktop machine. There’s a picture of one on this page: http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20020301/raid-02.html

Oh, and it’s cheap. Something in the neighborhood of five bucks.

Alternatively, you can get external housings that can take a 2.5" laptop hard drive and connect to your PC via USB - if your laptop drive is of a decent enough size to make it worth keeping as a backup device, consider one of these.

Yep, computergeeks.com should have those cases.

Thanks, all. I really appreciate your help.

They are also all over eBay, but if you get one, look for one that powers the drive from USB alone (saves carting around a hefty power supply.
