Triple Crown

Does the Triple Crown win pay a higher percentage to the trainer and jockey?

Since this is about sports, let’s move it to the Game Room.

I know they are likely to get bonuses and higher pay in the future.

Everyone down to the groom gets a share. The Jockey takes 10%, in this case, Espinoza earned 80,000 for the B Stakes, 90,000 for the Preakness, 120,000 for the K Derby. He may have to payout his agent and his assistant if he one one, out if his own winnings. Espinoza donated his entire B Stakes purse to a cancer charity though.

There’s no bonus for cracking the TC, just the purses which themselves are large, however, like any major sporting achievement it puts a shine on the reputation of the owner, breeder, and trainer, that lasts a long time.

There was a time when there was a bonus offered for winning the Triple Crown. I think it started after Spend A Buck won the 1985 Derby, but skipped the Preakness and Belmont to enter the Jersey Derby because he was eligible for a $2 million bonus if he won that race (which he did). Most of the time, the bonus was $5 million, but there were a few years where it was “$5 million minus the amounts won for winning each race.”

I remember that. I even looked it up because I thought there must be a bonus purse. But it does not seem to be the case today.

Google is your friend guys…

The whole history is there, but it essentially ended in 2005.
