Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the Union; this happened on March 1, 1803. The state took its name from the Ohio River, whose name originated from a Seneca word meaning “good river”, “great river” or “large creek”.
My sister once wrote to Florida humorist Dave Barry, asking, “If people from New York are called New Yorkers, and people from Chicago are called Chicagoans, why are people from Liverpool called Liverpudlians?”
He sent her back a postcard, writing, and I quote, “Hell if I know. Love, Dave Barry.”
ETA: Ninja’d! East Liverpool is in Ohio, which has 17 stars on its flag, symbolizing the fact that it is the 17th state.
That is Benson’s opinion. There is other information available saying that Sagan did help Kubrick, including Sagan himself. In their conversation, Sagan contributed to Kubrick’s decision to not show aliens at all.

The date of March 1, 1803 was when the Ohio legislature met for the first time. This was retroactively made the statehood date by a 1953 Resolution of the United States Congress.

PCR, Polymerase Chain Reaction, is a method to make copies of what can be very small amounts of a DNA sample to make billions of DNA copies. For a given DNA sample, a primer and polymerase are needed. The primer is the complementary sequence to the DNA sample. The DNA polymerase are free enzymes essential for DNA replication to occur.
The PCR method is a repeated cycle of events that results in an exponential growth of DNA sequence copies:
- At high temperature, denaturing is when the DNA strands are physically separated
- At lower temperature, the separated strands bind to the free enzymes to double the number of the initial DNA sequence sample
Repeated thermal cycling results in successive doubling of the DNA sequence and results in the exponential amplification of those copies.
Benson quotes Clarke, IIRC, as saying that Kubrick found Sagan really irritating and then was even a little resentful of Clarke for bringing him in as a consultant. I’m not terribly surprised that Sagan would say he had a bigger role in the movie’s development than he actually did.
In the many books and articles I’ve read about the movie, I’ve never read anyone who said Sagan did anything other than have a one-time consultation with Kubrick and Clarke, and that, early on. I would welcome a reputable cite to the contrary.

Colo. was one of the old-style pre-zipcode abbreviations. A number of states had abbreviations that didn’t even reduce the name by half, such as Ariz. , Ida., Kans, Mont., Oreg., Tex. Which raised the question of why abbreviate.
