How about a thread full of really difficult trivia questions? And, not just trivia, but original trivia!
To get us started, here’s mine:

**What is the significance of the following?
IV65536**
That’s the bottom-most, right-most cell in an Excel spreadsheet.
Zev Steinhardt
Well, 4 (IV) and 65536 are both powers of 2, but after spending a few minutes juggling possible combinations, I’m not seeing anything significant.
OK, here’s my contribution:
What do the following biblical personalities have in common?
Moses
Samuel
Ichabod
Esther
Zev Steinhardt [sub]who’s not one of the biblical personalities.[/sub]
Zev:
How the hell did you know that?!?
I have a list of potential hints on my desk right now… I couldn’t wait to jump in here and feel smug.
Wow. You’re a serious Excel geek.
As far as:
Ummm… “Ichabod”? AFAIK, not a Biblical Personality.
Here’s a movie stumper–Fill in the 4th film:
Gone With the Wind
A Streetcar Named Desire
Network
???
These four films have one unique thing in common that no other movie in history can claim. It is an ultra-specific answer, but one that does not require having actually seen all four films. What is the missing film?
What do these former major leaguers all have in common?
Hank Aaron
Babe Ruth
Willie Mays
Dizzy Dean
Dwight Gooden
Darryl Strawberry
Cy Young
… and just to make it harder, make sure that the following players do not fit the rule:
Lance Johnson
Dave Kingman
Rafael Santana
Diego Segui
And one more baseball question: What was unique about pitcher Al Benton?

They are all in the Old Testament?
They were all Jewish?
They all lived in Eqypt at one time?
They were all royalty at one time or another?
**
From sitting bored in an Excel class one day and wondering “Gee… how far will this spreadsheet go?”
Yes he is. I’ll even make it simpler for you… he’s in 1 Samuel (Shmuel Alef between me and you)…

True, but if that were the answer this wouldn’t be a hard question.
**
They all lived in Eqypt at one time?
**
Nope. Only Moses (of the four I mentioned) did.
**
They were all royalty at one time or another?
**
No. Samuel and Ichabod were never royalty. And Moses was only by adoption.

Moonstruck
These are movies in which the Oscars for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress were for performances in the same film. They were Vivien Leigh and Hattie McDaniel in Gone With the Wind (1939), Vivien Leigh and Kim Hunter in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight in Network (1976) and Cher and Olympia Dukakis in Moonstruck (1987).
What is the name of the ski jumper who symbolized “the agony of defeat” on the opening of Wide World of Sports?
OK, Zev, it took me a while, but I think I got it.
What do the following biblical personalities have in common?
Moses
Samuel
Ichabod
Esther
Is it the fact that none of them was raised by his or her natural parents?

Isn’t that Eddie “the Eagle”?
Here’s one back at ya:
What little-known Celtic was asked to be the first white Harlem Globetrotter?

Vinko Bogatej, a Yugoslavian ski jumper.

No. The clip was used on the Wide World opening for at least a decade before Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards gained notoriety at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Any Advanced Trivia contest is obliged to start with the following question:
What is the origin of the word trivia?
And, looking it up in the OED is cheating (but effective).
Of course, because it’s obligatory, every serious trivia nut already knows the answer…

Bob Karstens? He was “the first Caucasian player to be under contract” with the Globetrotters. I don’t know if he played with the Celtics. Technically, Abe Saperstein was the first non-black person to play with the Globetrotters. Buddy Levitt was another one who played before Karstens.

I think the correct spelling is “Bogataj”, but I’ll give it to you.

If it wasn’t for Babe Ruth, I’d say that all of their names include at least one set of double letters. Damn him.
TRIVIA was the Roman word for a three street intersection where the guys would sit around and bullshit, watching the wortld go by. Glad they decided on “trivia” and not “bullshit”.

Yep, that’s it, sdimbert! Like your Excel question, I thought that would last a bit longer.
