Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

Bob Crane (Hogan) was an accomplished drummer, and he showed off his skills in a couple of episodes of the show, most notably in “Look at the Pretty Snowflakes” in season six, where he performed the drum solo on ‘Cherokee’ in an attempt to trigger an avalanche as part of the storyline. He also performed the distinctive military-style snare drum rhythm that introduces the show’s theme song.

Very interesting! Did not know that. I watched that show a lot as a kid. I can hear that drum now, and see the boot running through the doorway.

Snowflakes take on a variety of shapes, basic among these are platelets, needles, columns and rime.

Hard rime is a white ice that forms when the water droplets in fog freeze to the outer surfaces of objects. It is often seen on trees atop mountains and ridges in winter, when low-hanging clouds cause freezing fog.

In the winter of 1952–1953, 974.1 inches of snow fell on Thompson Pass, Alaska—the most snow ever recorded in one season at one location anywhere in the fifty states. The pass also holds the Alaska record for the most snow in a single day: 62 inches fell on December 29, 1955.

On January 19, 1977, snowfall was recorded at Homestead Air Force Base in Miami-Dade County, Florida. This is the farthest south in the contiguous United States that snowfall has been recorded.

The same weather system dumped snow on the island of Grand Bahama, which is the only instance of snow being observed in the history of the Bahamas.

At 18 degrees 55 minutes north, Ka Lae on the Big Island of Hawaii is the southernmost point in the US.

A buoy on the island of Key West FL, at 24 degrees 32 minutes north, marks the southernmost point in the continental US.

“The Continental,” performed by Fred Astaire in The Gay Divorcee, was the first to win an Oscar for Best Original Song.

In June 1775, John and Samuel Adams of Massachusetts nominated their Continental Congress colleague George Washington of Virginia to serve as commanding general of the newly-formed Continental Army. Washington left the room while the appointment was discussed, and was soon unanimously elected to the post. He said, in accepting it, “I am truly sensible of the high Honor done me in this Appointment… [but] I do not think myself equal to the Command I am honored with.” He served as the top American military officer for more than eight long, hard years, only resigning in December 1783, after victory was won and American independence secured.

Abigail Adams was…

  • the first Second Lady of the USA, and
  • the second First Lady of the USA…

… although the titles were not in use at that time.

The title of Second Lady, or SLOTUS, was first used for Jennie Hobart, wife of Garret Hobart, Vice President to William McKinley in 1897-1899.

The origins of the title of First Lady, or FLOTUS, are less clear. One of the earliest known written examples comes from the November 3, 1863, diary entry of William Howard Russell, in which he referred to gossip about “the First Lady in the Land”, referring to Mary Todd Lincoln.

A digital display in the office of the Director of the U.S. Secret Service shows the current whereabouts of the President, the First Lady, the Vice President and the Second Lady (now Second Gentleman) at all times.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was the only James Bond film to star Australian model George Lazenby and the only one directed by Peter R. Hunt. Lazenby was the youngest actor cast as Bond, at age 29, and the only born outside of the British Isles. In interviews, he has said that he moved to London on a whim, to pursue a woman with whom he had fallen in love.

Lazenby’s co-star/Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was Diana Rigg, who had also played a British secret agent on the television series, The Avengers. Her predecessor on The Avengers, Honor Blackman (who portrayed Cathy Gale on the show) had previously appeared in the Bond film, Goldfinger – and Joanna Lumley, who played Purdy in “The New Avengers”, a short-lived 1970s reboot of the original series, was cast as one of Blofeld’s ‘Angel of Death’ girls in OHMSS as well.

And finally, Avengers star Patrick Macnee also became a part of the Bond legacy when he was cast as a fellow SIS/MI6 agent and ally to Bond in 1985’s A View to a Kill.

In Goldfinger, James Bond was in a car chase over the Furka Pass.

Runaway Match is a 1903 short silent movie; the total run time is about five minutes. The plot concerns a young couple that elope by car. Her father, opposed to the union, gives chase in his limousine. When his car breaks down and he is too late to prevent the marriage, he accepts his new son-in-law.

This is believed to be the first car chase in a movie.

The term “limousine” refers to a luxury automobile, typically driven by a chauffeur. The term derives from Limousin, a region in southwestern France, though it is not clear how it came to be applied to the style of automobile.

Limousin is a province in southwest-central France. The city of Limoges is the historical capital and largest city of the province. With 742,770 inhabitants across nearly 6,600 square miles, it is the least populated region of metropolitan France.

When he became Emperor of France, Napoleon I retained the tricolor of the Revolutionary government as the national flag. Except for a 15-year hiatus after Napoleon’s defeat and abdication (1815-30), when the Bourbon monarchy was restored to the throne, the tricolor has been the flag of France ever since.

Besides France, at least 15 other countries have a vertical tricolor national flag of equal size stripes. These include: Afghanistan, Andorra, Belgium, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Germany, Guinea, Ireland, Italy, Mali, Mexico, Moldova, Romania, and Senegal.

Afghanistan is a land-locked country, bordered by Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. It has a population of about 32 million, with 4.6 million people living in the capital of Kabul.

The Afghan Hound is a tall dog breed, known for its long, silky coat. The breed originated in Afghanistan, and after examples of the breed were brought to England in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a popular breed in the West.

Queen Anne (played by Olivia Colman in The Favourite, a role for which she won the Best Actress Oscar), was the last person to hold the title “Queen of England,” as such, although it is still commonly used to refer to British female monarchs such as the incumbent, Elizabeth II, who has reigned since 1952.
