Martin Luther published his German translation of the New Testament in 1522, and he and his collaborators completed the translation of the Old Testament in 1534. Although there were several other Germanic translations of the Bible before Luther, his was the first to use a variant of the German language that was recognizable by both northern and southern Germans. His translation helped foster the development of a standard version of the German language.
When East Germany joined West Germany in a single Federal Republic of Germany in October 1990 with the collapse of Eastern-bloc communism, both countries were reunited under West Germany’s flag, a horizontal tricolor in black, red and yellow. This was the same as the East German flag, but without the national emblem.
Coral snakes are a group of venomous snakes; North American species of coral snake have a red, black, and yellow coloration – however, a number of non-venomous snakes also have these colors, but in different combinations.
A mnemonic has arisen to help identify whether a snake with those colors (in North America, at least) is or is not a venomous coral snake. The mnemonic has several variations on wording, but all are based on this structure, and on which colors are adjacent to which other colors on the snake’s body:
“Red next to black, venom lack; red next to yellow, you’re a dead fellow.”
Astronomers believe most galaxies have a super massive black hole at their center. According to their calculations, our own galaxy, the Milky Way, has a black hole that is 4 million times the mass of our local star, the Sun. By contrast, the Andromeda Galaxy may have black hole at its center that is 140 million times the mass of the Sun, and observations of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 suggest the presence of a black hole 6 billion times more massive than the Sun.
Notwithstanding Hollywood films such as Disney’s The Black Hole, most astrophysicists today believe that black holes do not remorselessly pull everything into them but that, like any other very large object such as a star or planet that has its own gravity well, black holes may in time be safely approached, orbited and studied from spaceships.
On February 4, 1938, the first Disney movie, Snow White, was released. Within five years, five more Disney movies were released: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, and Saludos Amigos.
Laurie “Bambi” Bembenek was a former Milwaukee police officer, and former model, who was convicted in 1982 of the murder of her husband’s ex-wife. The trial was widely covered in the media (in part because Bembenek was an attractive young woman), and was marked by claims of police errors, as well as claims that Bembenek had been set up (her husband was also a Milwaukee police officer).
In 1990, Bembenek successfully escaped from the Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Wisconsin, and sought refuge in Canada; after her capture, she was granted a new trial, but then pled “no contest” to a second-degree murder charge, and was granted parole in recognition of time already served.
The first pro football inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton OH, whose career was predominantly in the AFL, was wide receiver Lance Alworth. He was inducted in 1978 after a pro career from 1962 to 1972. He played with the San Diego Chargers of the AFL from 1962 to 1970. He was then traded to the Dallas Cowboys (after the AFL-NFL merger) and played for two more seasons. In Super Bowl VI, Alworth scored the first touchdown of the game, a 7-yard reception from quarterback Roger Staubach. Alworth had a very slender build, and was fast and had good jumping ability. As such, his nickname was “Bambi”.
The winner of the annual AFL (Australian Football League) premiership has their name placed on the E. L. Wilson shield.
Edward L. Wilson was born in Ferndale, California in 1931. He is a civil engineer, and was once an engineering professor at UC Berkeley. He is one of the early pioneers in the field of finite element analysis.
Edward L. Wilson has no known relationship with the AFL, the Australian Football League.
Woodrow Wilson, as a boy, saw the captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis taken in irons by U.S. Army troops through his hometown of Staunton, Va.
After the end of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis was imprisoned for two years. He was released on bail of $100,000, which was posted by a group of men which included Horace Greeley and Cornelius Vanderbilt. He remained under indictment for treason until Christmas Day of 1868, when President Andrew Johnson issued a blanket pardon to those who had been charged with treason against the United States. A federal court formally dismissed the charges against Davis in February of 1869.

Whereas the President of the United States has heretofore set forth several proclamations offering amnesty and pardon to persons who had been or were concerned in the late rebellion against the lawful authority of the Government of the United States, which proclamations were severally issued on the 8th day of December, 1863, on the 26th day of March, 1864, on the 29th day of May, 1865, on the 7th day of September, 1867, and on the 4th day of July, in the present year; and
Whereas the authority of the Federal Government having been reestablished in all the States and Territories within the jurisdiction of the United States, it is believed that such prudential reservations and exceptions as at the dates of said several proclamations were deemed necessary and proper may now be wisely and justly relinquished, and that an universal amnesty and pardon for participation in said rebellion extended to all who have borne any part therein will tend to secure permanent peace, order, and prosperity throughout the land, and to renew and fully restore confidence and fraternal feeling among the whole people, and their respect for and attachment to the National Government, designed by its patriotic founders for the general good:
Now, therefore, be it known that I, Andrew Johnson President of the United States, by virtue of the power and authority in me vested by the Constitution and in the name of the sovereign people of the United States, do hereby proclaim and declare unconditionally and without reservation, to all and to every person who, directly or indirectly, participated in the late insurrection or rebellion a full pardon and amnesty for the offense of treason against the United States or of adhering to their enemies during the late civil war, with restoration of all rights, privileges, and immunities under the Constitution and the laws which have been made in pursuance thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed these presents with my hand and have caused the seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed.

Henry Kissinger, who was born in the city of Fürth, in Bavaria, Germany, is a lifelong soccer fan; in particular, he is a fan of his hometown club, SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
Bavaria was once a kingdom. The king in pretence is, no surprise, the Duke of Bavaria Franz Bonaventura Adalbert Maria Herzog von Bayern.
Bavaria is the largest state in Germany by area. Its main cities are Munich (capital, largest by population), Nuremberg, and Augsburg.
North Rhine-Westphalia is the second-largest state in Germany by area. Its main cities are Cologne (largest), Düsseldorf (capital), Dortmund, and Essen. North Rhine-Westphalia has a larger population than Bavaria.
For four years, from 1880 to 1884, the Cologne Cathedral reigned as the tallest man-made structure in the world. The Washington Monument took over that honor, though the cathedral was still the tallest building, supplanted by the Ulm Minster in 1890.

Construction began on the Washington Monument in 1848. Funded by private donations, the building continued for six years, at which time it was halted due to lack of funds. Finally, in 1876, Congress authorized monies for completion of the structure, and the process began again. The capstone was placed on December 6, 1884, and the monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885.
