Lester Fisher was a veterinarian, who succeeded Marlon Perkins as director of the Lincoln Park Zoo in 1962, when Perkins left to take the same position with the St. Louis Zoo. Fisher became well-known in Chicago for his appearances with zoo animals on children’s shows on television station WGN, such as “Ray Rayner and His Friends” and “Bozo’s Circus.”
Fisher, who had served in the U.S. Army in World War II as the personal veterinarian for General George Patton’s bull terrier, retired from the Lincoln Park Zoo in 1992, and held the title of Director Emeritus of the zoo until his death, at age 100, in December of 2021.
This was on my parents’ list of Approved Shows That The Kids Could Watch. We watched it whenever we could.
In play: After the German surrender in World War II, General George Patton was appointed military governor of Bavaria, where he led the Third Army in denazification efforts. But after a number of erratic incidents and arguments with his superiors, he was relieved of command on October 7, 1945. Patton made plans to leave Europe for good on December 10, but he suffered a serious neck injury in a car accident on December 9. He died on December 21 at the age of 60.
As a 26-year-old Army cavalry officer, George Patton was selected to compete in the first-ever Olympic modern pentathlon at the 1912 Summer Games in Stockholm. Of the 42 competitors, he finished in fifth place.
Eighty-five percent of the jobs in the city of Stockholm Sweden are in the service industry. This is because there is no manufacturing or heavy industry within the city limits, making Stockholm one of the cleanest metropolises in the world.
The headquarters for Elekta is in Stockholm. I’ve visited a few times and yes, Stockholm is a clean city. Elekta makes equipment to treat cancer. Elekta’s manufacturing facilities include Linköping, Sweden, and Crawley, England.
Swedish massage is one of the most popular techniques of massage. Known for its long gliding strokes towards the heart, the practice aims to relax and energize the patient. It was developed by Swedish fencing instructor Per Henrik Ling in the 1830s, and was brought to the United States by brothers Dr. Charles Taylor and Dr. George Taylor.
In artillery ballistics calculations, PER stands for probable error in range and PED stands for probable error in deflection (or azimuth), and PER is usually larger than PED. These probable errors are distance values within which 50% of artillery rounds fired at a point will fall within. The distribution of impacts for artillery fired at a given point will, as the number of rounds fired at a given point using the same firing data increases to infinity, form an ellipse defining the PER and PED values as the semi major axis and semi minor axis, respectively.
For US artillery, these mathematical models are typically defined at the former BRL, the US Ballistics Research Laboratory in Aberdeen MD. In 1992, BRL was replaced by ARL, the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi MD.
PED is also an acronym for “performance-enhancing drugs,” a broad term referring to any substance which may improve an individual’s performance in an activity.
The term is most commonly applied to sports, in which taking a PED is sometimes referred to as “doping,” and many sports leagues and organizations have restricted or banned the use of many PEDs. However, PEDs can also include substances which are intended to enhance cognition (typically used by students) or combat performance (used by soliders).
As of today, no known PED user has been elected to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. The list of former players who may have HOF credentials but have not been elected because of known steroid or other PED use include Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, and Alex Rodriguez.
Dr. Barry Farber was the name of the boring dentist whom Rachel Green leaves behind at the altar in the series premiere of the NBC comedy Friends, fleeing to the Central Perk coffeehouse in her wedding gown. Later, she learns that he cheated on her while they were dating, and also cheats on the woman whom he later marries.
In the Bible’s Old Testament, Jacob (the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham) marries Rachel’s older sister, Leah. They have four sons together: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. But Jacob had been tricked by Leah’s father, Laban, because it had been Rachel that Jacob wanted to marry. Jacob was later permitted to marry Rachel. Through jealousy by the two wives they each gave a servant to Jacob, and Jacob had two sons with each of them. With Bilhah he had sons Dan and Naphtali, and with Zilpah he had sons Gad and Asher.
With Leah, Jacob had two more sons: Issachar and Zebulun. And then with Rachel, Jacob had two more sons: Joseph and Benjamin.
Jacob, also called Israel, had these twelve sons:
Reuben (by Leah)
Simeon (by Leah)
Levi (by Leah)
Judah (by Leah)
Dan (by Bilhah)
Naphtali (by Bilhah)
Gad (by Zilpah)
Asher (by Zilpah)
Issachar (by Leah)
Zebulun (by Leah)
Joseph (by Rachel)
Benjamin (by Rachel)
The families of these twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel that is spoken of in the Old Testament. And it is Judah that is the ancestor of Jesus.
Rachel (currently #227) and Leah (#45) consistently appear on the list of most popular names for girls in the United States. Bilhah and Zilpah, however, do not.
The year of British actress (and Daniel Craig’s wife) Rachel Weisz’s birth is apparently uncertain; Wikipedia says she was born on March 7 in either 1970 or 1971, of Hungarian Jewish parents who fled their country to escape the Holocaust.
The Hungarian Uprising of October 1956 was the first major nationalist challenge to the Soviet Union’s control of Hungary since the Soviet Army ended the Nazi occupation of Hungary at the end of the Second World War in Europe, in May 1945. Pro-revolution elements of the Honvédség, the Hungarian People’s Army, along with armed citizens, attacked the Soviet Armed Forces. The uprising was eventually repressed in November. Nearly 20,000 Hungarians were killed, while an additional 21,600 were imprisoned afterward for political reasons. Some 13,000 were interned and 230 brought to trial and executed.
The nation of Austria-Hungary (a.k.a. the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy or Austro-Hungarian Empire) existed in that form from 1867 until 1918. It was a constitutional monarchy, and was the final form of the Habsburg Monarchy.
At the end of World War I, Austria-Hungary collapsed, and was formally dissolved in the autumn of 1918.
The Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 most likely did not originate in Spain. There were hundreds of cases with similar symptoms reported in Fort Riley, Kansas among enlisted personnel just before many were shipping out to Europe.
The influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A/H1N1) caused the 1918 flu pandemic as well as outbreaks of the 1977 Russian flu and the 2009 swine flu. It contains the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase glycoproteins and is described as H1N1 based on the type of H or N surface antigens it expresses, and it is these antigens that stimulate immune responses. H1N1 is a swine flu. It started in pigs and was first recognized in 1919.
There are 16 (H1 to H16) known types of hemagglutinin proteins and 9 (N1 to N9) known types of neuraminidase, proteins. This gives 144 different possible subtypes (viruses) of these proteins, and each subtype can be broken down into different strains.
H5N1 is a bird flu, or avian flu, that primarily infects birds, but it can also infect humans. The H5N1 flu is most often contracted by contact with sick birds. It can also be passed from person to person.
While influenza and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. Influenza is caused by infection with influenza A, or B viruses (and possibly the influenza C virus), while COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 and whose origin is currently thought to be from bats.
The influenza C virus typically causes mild symptoms. There is a fourth influenza virus, the influenza D virus, that primarily affects cattle and is not known to infect or cause illness in people.
Susan Sarandon, 29 at the time and neither a bird (except in the UK) or a pig, was fighting a case of pneumonia when she was filming The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
