The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, better known by its informal name “Jonestown”, was a remote settlement established by the Peoples Temple, a cult under the leadership of Jim Jones, in northwestern Guyana. It became internationally known when, on November 18, 1978, a total of 918 people died in the settlement, at the nearby airstrip in Port Kaituma, and at a Temple-run building in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital city. The name of the settlement became synonymous with the incidents at those locations.

Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. In size, Guyana is larger than New York state but smaller than Idaho.

Eva Duarte Peron’s life is considered to be the perfect popular culture icon for our times because her career foreshadowed what, by the late 20th century, had become common. During Evita’s time it was considered scandalous for a former entertainer to take part in public political life. Her detractors in Argentina had often accused Evita of turning public political life into show business. But by the late 20th century the public had become engrossed in the cult of celebrity and public political life had become insignificant. In this regard, Evita was ahead of her time.

Ag is the chemical symbol for silver. Ag is Argentum, the latin word for silver and meaning “white” or “shining”, and where Argentina got its name. The atomic number for Argentum is 47, placing it on the periodic table of elements between Palladium 46 and Cadmium 48.

In the old Lone Ranger series, his white horse was named Silver. His sidekick, Tonto, played by Native American Jay Silverheels rode a pinto horse named Scout. The Lone Ranger’s nephew, Dan Reid, also had a white horse, whose name was Victor.

Jay Silverheels, whose birth name was Harold Jay Smith, was a member of the Mohawk nation, and was born and raised in Ontario.

As a young man in the 1930s, he was an athlete – he played indoor (“box”) lacrosse as a member of several teams in the North American Amateur Lacrosse Association, and was also a boxer.

While playing lacrosse in Los Angeles in 1937, Silverheels caught the attention of comic actor Joe E. Brown, who encouraged him to take a screen test. This led to Silverheels’ acting career; he adopted his stage name from a nickname he had been given while playing lacrosse.

Silver (“argent”) and white are the same thing in classical heraldry, typically represented by a blank field in black and white illustrations.

The Latin argentum and the Greek argyros are derived from Proto-Indo-European “arg-u-ro” = silver (or other white shining metals) and are related to Sanskrit arj-una = light.

Argent was an English rock band founded in 1969 by keyboardist Rod Argent. Rod Argent was formerly the keyboardist and vocalist for the band The Zombies. The most popular single by the band was ‘Hold Your Head Up’, which reached #5 on the pop charts.

7up beverages were originally called “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda”, when marketed in 1929 by s St. Louis company. It’s principle kicker, lithium citrate, was removed in 1948 (I drank some that year and didn’t notice). One theory of the name 7up reflects the 7-ounce bottle, while Coca Cola and other competitors were 6-ounce.

The starship USS Enterprise’s warp drive in Star Trek: The Original Series was originally said to rely on lithium as a key component or element, but later references were to the fictional dilithium (although there IS a real dilithium).

8435 Roanoke Dr, St. Louis MO 63121 is the address where the real exorcism took place that inspired the 1971 book, The Exorcist and led to the 1973 movie, The Exorcist.

From The Exorcist (novel) — Factual basis for the novel, Wikipedia:

(bolding mine)

Ninja’d: there weren’t any exorcisms on STTOS episodes.

In 1904, Elizabeth Magie, of Cottage City, Maryland, invented and patented a board game intended to illustrate and warn against the economic threats posed by the current economics. She sold the patent for $500, and it subsequently got reworked into Monopoly.

NAPS, the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport RI, is the only official prep school for the US Naval Academy in Annapolis MD.

NAPS is also the unfortunate acronym of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, an advocacy and social group of U.S. Postal Service middle-management officials.

The middle of this year’s 2020 Iditarod sled dog race has been reached, at Cripple, Alaska. Current race leader Brent Sass of Eureka AK arrived in Cripple AK last night at 2154 hrs local time. Cripple is a ghost town. Its population is 0, and it is part of the famous Iditarod Mining District which saw $35 million in gold taken out of the area between 1908 and 1925. Not bad when you figure that gold was only worth $20 an ounce in those days.

In today’s dollars, with gold currently at $1,610 an ounce (USD), that would be almost $3 billion dollars. Exactly, it would be $2,817,500,000 (from ($35,000,000 ÷ $20/ounce = 1,750,000 ounces) X $1,610/ounce).

The Cripple AK checkpoint marks the “official” halfway point in the race for the northern route, signified by GCI’s presentation of a halfway trophy and $3,000 in gold nuggets to the first musher to reach the checkpoint.

Brent Sass picked up his gold, about 2 ounces, last night.
